Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province and the 2008 earthquake struck hardest about 80km from the city. Reportedly all has been returned to normal in the city now, a fantastic place to visit and very different from the western regions of the state. Without doubt many people come here to visit the pandas, see the other entry in this guide, but there are plenty of other things to do. Jin Li Ancient Street is worth checking out, aprt of the old city of Chengdu with hotels and stores designed in old fashioned style. You can also visit Du Fu's Cottage, the home of a Tang poet. Theatre and tea houses are also important to Chengdu, so make sure you hang out at any number of these in town, the ones in the People's Park are fun and you can enjoy the entertainment of tai chi, aerobics, dancing and other activities here as well.
