Ranking among the world's ten major military museums, the Museum of Revolutionary Military shows the 5,000-year history of the military in China. Exhibits are separated into five halls. The museum includes items from the Red Army's The Long March in the 1930s, as well as exhibits related to the war against Japan in the 1930s. The museum also houses a large collection of weapons dating from ancient China (such as stone axes and knives, and bronze swords) up through the modern era (guns, tanks, and bomber plans).

This popular science educational base located in the Hai Dan District is all of 150 sq feet and will defiantly take you back in time. A display of Chinese cinema of all times, a host for expos on film technology, and a medium for research and intellectual exchanges on film and cinema culture, are all possible at this wonderful 63 acre museum devoted to film. With an IMAX theater and numerous exhibition halls—20 host permanent collections, you have entered a film buff's fantasy. The collection is so extensive that it hosts the works of 450 different filmmakers! This comes to 1500 films, and 4300 stills. It will be quite difficult to cover everything in a day but it is worth a try.

With a large collection of books, magazines, newspapers, photos, and letters among other things, the National Museum of Modern Chinese Literature is as much a library as it is a museum. There are also more museum-like features such as exhibitions and lectures. However, the scope of the museum is not completely limited to Chinese authors, it also houses literature written by authors abroad from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and other countries.

Shanghai History Museum was founded in 1983 and is the biggest museum in Shanghai. It has more to do with the ancient history and culture of Shanghai and China than anything else. The museum moved to the basement of the Shanghai Pearl Oriental Tower in 2000. A fee to enter the tower may be added to the admission price of the ticket. Within the Museum are room-sized displays of earlier times in Shanghai, going back to its days as a fishing village. One interesting element incorporated into the displays are the scents the curators add to give a fuller impression of each era.

Located in the 19th Century Murray House on Stanley Plaza, the Maritime Museum was organized by Hong Kong shipping interests to highlight the important role seafaring has played in Hong Kong's history and present. The museum's collection includes some rare and beautiful pieces from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and Republican period to fill out the picture of Hong Kong's maritime past. The modern gallery includes full scale models of modern shipping vessels. Special exhibits are regularly held. Along with a museum store and view of Stanley Bay, this museum makes an excellent afternoon trip through Causeway Bay.

The Museum of History has exhibitions planned on a regular basis and are great for kids as well as adults. They are interactive, jazzy, bilingual and informative. Past exhibitions have looked at Chinese history and localised stories and events. The museum is located right next to the Science Museum so if you take it easy and don't spend too much time dragging the children around the showcases, take them next door. You can spend the whole day in this fun and educative environment.

Capital Museum is a seven floor museum that features artifacts, architecture and art from throughout Beijing. The museum was designed with a combination of modern and classic architecture, including an archway from the Ming Dynasty. The exhibits are described in both Chinese and English.

A fairly recent addition to Beijing's museums, the Wax Museum offers a chance to see all of your favorite Chinese historical, political and cultural figures carefully prepared from large slabs of wax. While it is not London's Madam Tussaud's, it is interesting enough for a visit and maybe a slight giggle. If you don't find the museum to your liking, you can always take a walk through popular Di Tan Park and take part in the lifestyles of "real" Chinese.

Learn all about the art of Chinese pottery making from ancient times to present day. The museum offers very nice examples of Ming and Qing Dynasty works, as well as some relics from Neolithic times. The museum itself is small, and many of its works can be found in larger, more impressive museums around Beijing. Reportedly, on some weekends, a pottery wheel is brought out and a hands-on instruction is presented.

This six-hall museum traces the history of sports in China over the past 5,000 years with a collection of cultural relics, photos, paintings, trophies and medals. On display in the Ancient Sports Hall are exhibits portraying sporting activities in imperial China, while the Contemporary Hall traces sporting development from 1840-1949. The three modern sports halls, which constitute the main body of the museum, outline achievements since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The spiraling structure of the museum also shows off the unique variety of the sports of the country's 56 ethnic groups, including Mongolian wrestling and Korean seesawing and swinging.

The largest museum in China, the Palace Museum was the home of 24 different emperors and resides at the center of Beijing and the Forbidden city. With 70 halls and 9,000 rooms you will never feel that there is not enough to look at. This is truly a trip through history, and is a must see if you are visiting Beijing. Located next to Little Qinqdao Island, this military history center is China's largest naval museum. Visitors can amble through the narrow corridors and cramped living quarters of submarines and destroyers that once served in the Chinese navy. The museum is divided into three sections: uniforms, weapons and warships. Each display area features thousands of artifacts providing historical insight on China's naval history. Given the secretive nature of China's government this museum is a refreshing surprise.
