Cambodia

Cambodia, officially the Kingdom of Cambodia and formerly known as Kampuchea, is located in Southeast Asia and has a population over 13 million. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh.
Cambodia is the successor state of the former Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire. The Khmer Empire was based in modern-day Cambodia and had ruled large portions of South East Asia, including areas that are now Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Malaysia during the eleventh to fourteenth centuries.
A Cambodian citizen is usually referred to as "Cambodian". Ethnic Khmers may also be identified as "Khmer". Most Cambodians (approximately 95% of the population) are Theravada Buddhists, but the country also has many Muslim Cham, as well as ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese and small animist hill tribes.
Cambodia shares its borders with Thailand to the west and northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east and southeast, and the Gulf of Thailand on the south. Two predominant features in Cambodia's geography are the Mekong river and the Tonlé Sap ("the fresh water lake"), an important source of fish. The Mekong river (also known as Tonle Thom meaning "the great river") is the 7th longest river in Asia and runs from the Tibetan Plateau through China's Yunnan province, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Cambodia's economy is based on the garment, tourism, and construction industries. In 2007, 4 million foreigners visited Angkor Wat. In 2005, oil and natural gas deposits were found beneath Cambodia's territorial waters; commercial extraction is planned to begin in 2011, at which time the oil revenues could profoundly affect Cambodia's economy.
