My favorite was probably Fes, a bustling city which is one of the biggest in Morocco. In the Medina (or Old Town), there are no cars but the roads are still packed with pedestrians, mopeds, carts pulled by donkeys or horses or even goats, and all sorts of vendors selling colorful rugs, silk, leather, silver, clothing and shoes, and food.

It's the fourth year in a row we were celebrating together and, actually, in 4th different country:2005 - Prague, 2006 - Ukraine, 2007 - Serbia and 2008 - Morocco. We hoped the tradition would definitely continue. At 00:00 there was almost nobody on Djemma el Fna, only tourist trying to have some fun but finding themselves surrounded by indifferent to New Year atmosphere.

Marrakech was definitely a more western dining experience for us than Fes (or the Atlas Mountains). This was in part due to my chicken tagine boycott and in part due to the fact that we delegated to our hosts Cyril at the Riad for suggestions.

Our waitress explained that Briouat are a speciality of Fes - another Moroccan city, and that Pastilla is traditionally only served at weddings or for honoured guests. In the case of a wedding, they make one as big as the table we were eating on.
