Being right on the beach within walking distance of many of the stone carvings and monuments. The carved stone temples are in pretty good shape considering their waterfront location, as is a stone relief known as Arjuna's Penace. My favorite site was a huge round rock, known popularly as "Buddha's Navel." During the day, goats sit under it to get out of the blazing sun.

The hotel is very European, converted from a nineteenth century house. Part of Pondicherry has a European air. The policemen wear kepis, the round cap worn by police in France today and French is spoken in many pleaces. The hotel has a lovely interior courtyard where you can eat --it is especially lovely at breakfast before the heat kicks in. The rooms have antique (or antique-style) furniture

The hotel is not fancy but the rooms are large and comfortable. The meals are buffet and consist largely of Indian foods but there's always something for Westerners who find Indian food too spicy. On some days there is a cooking lesson which is fun. Best, the hotel is near the Periyar Tiger Reserve which I visited by boat --there's a huge lake in the center of the Reserve. Didn't spot a tigert but saw plenty of elephants, birds of many varieties and monkeys.

We opted for a room in the Heritage Wing which is older than the new tower and a bit more intimate. The hotel has a beautiful pool frequented by peacocks. Cochin is a big city with plenty to see. There's an ancient Jewish quarter with an old Synagogue even though the Jewish population of Cochin today is miniscule. We also visited a church cooled by fans attached to the beams running through the roof , rotated in earlier days, by hand. The church has a large statue of Vasco di Gamma who visited here.

Our room was a two story affair with a living room on the ground level and the bedroom upstairs, accessed via a very steep flight of stairs. The bathroom was one of the most beautiful I've ever been in. The sink ,toilet and shower were under a "roof" that ran around two walls; the rest of the space was open with a palm tree and other vegetation growing througth it. Showering felt like being out of doors although you had all the elegance of a fine hotel. Outside, you are right on the lakefront amid a unique breed of cows kept to mow the lawn.
