Avec Restaurant

Paul Kahan’s follow-up to Blackbird is this highly creative communal dining with Mediterranean flavors in the form of innovative small plates, paired with excellent wines and a variety of unique cheeses.

Blackbird Restaurant

Paul Kahan, executive chef at Blackbird (and Avec and Publican...) is a James Beard winner for a reason. This ultra-mod and hyper-seasonal restaurant is a gem in Windy City dining. But Tony passes on this local favorite, instead wrangling Chef Kahan into giving them a private backyard BBQ. More Kalamata Olive Cake and braised octopus for me!

Burt's Place

Tony meets up with Chicago chef and foodie Louisa Chu in Morton Grove to pay a visit to this deep dish mecca. It'll take you about five seconds of internet research to know that you need to call ahead and bring cash if you want one of these famous pies - but it's so worth it.

Calumet Fisheries Inc

Louisa Chu later takes Tony to the south side of Chicago where they enjoy some of the city's finest smoked seafood. This 81 year old city establishment is a Chicago institution - home of the best smoked fish in town. It's not known for being cheap, but it is worth it! Don't be intimidated when you realize it's little more than a tiny shack - just park your wheels in the tow zone like the rest of us and get your appetite ready!

Fat Johnnie's Famous Red Hots

Tony and local foodie (and mouse geneticist) head to Fat Johnnies for some strange and delicious items you won't find anyplace but here. Take the “Mighty Dog,” for example: it's a tamale and chili on a bun. Or how about “the Suicide,” a combination of every fountain drink on tap. It's not the best neighborhood, but with delicious options all at less than $5, it's worth the trip!

Hot Doug’s

We all know Tony loves hot dogs (well, meat in any tube form, really) but I bet you didn't know that the home of Tony's favorite dog is in Chicago - not his hometown of New York. Hot Doug's serves up the city's best, including a couple interesting options like the foie gras dog. And their fries cooked in duck fat can't be beat!

L2o Restaurant

Tony, Louisa Chu, and legendary Chicago chef Eric Ripert head out for some fine dining in the Windy City at L2o - a well-known seafood restaurant by an even better known chef, Laurent Gras. This tasting menu will blow you away thanks to chef Gras' deep understanding of the complexities of seafood flavor profiles.

Moto Restaurant

Moto is an avant-garde restaurant in Chicago, featuring the deconstructed, reinvented, and otherwise reinterpreted cuisine of Chef Homaro Cantu. More than a restaurant, this place is a true dining experience. Be prepared to see some of the most innovative and downright odd (but delicious!) dishes you'll ever see -- including the Cuban Cigar. Dishes are paired with the perfect alcoholic complement, so pace yourself!

Ramova Grill

Ramova is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but their most popular dish any time of day is the famous homemade chili. This is food as it should be: hot, greasy, prepared with plenty of love, and oh, yeah - cheap, with complete meals running at around $4.

Silver Palm Inc

Tony and famed radio personality Mancow Muller head to the Silver Palm for the (in)famous gigantic 3 Little Pigs pork sandwich - yum, pork is Tony's favorite after all!
