National Zoo

Once set in virgin jungle, the national zoo now stands like an oasis amidst a concrete jungle. The zoo features about 400 species of Malaysian and exotic mammals, reptiles and birds. There are numerous paths meandering between wooded groves and tree-lined enclaves where the animal enclosures are located. Among the more exotic exhibits are the Sumatran tiger, orangutans and gibbons. All are extremely rare outside this part of the world. There are also scheduled pony and elephant rides as well as a sea lion show daily.

Sri Mahamariaman Temple

The temple is an arresting sight. Built in 1873, it is the most elaborate Hindu temple in the country. Its gate tower is embellished with ornate sculptures of Hindu deities and its floors and walls marbled with Italian and Spanish tiles. This is the country's oldest temple and it occupies an important place in Hindu religious life. Inside, many Hindu worshipers offers prayer to the four-armed goddess. Visitors must remove their footwear before entering the temple. Outside, vendors sell fragrant jasmine flowers strung into garlands and Indian sweets.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium

Situated within the grounds of the National Zoo is the Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium. Like the Zoo, it also boasts some unusual specimens such as the Malayan Bony Tongue, Malaysia riverine carps and coral reef fish. Housed within the cool respite area is a display of over 80 species of aquatic animals, both freshwater and marine, as well as invertebrates. Children, especially, will find delight in this aquarium. Admission: Free.

Malaysia Tourism Centre

Situated along Jalan Ampang, MATIC was once known as the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Hall. Built in 1935, it was originally the mansion of Eu Tong Seng, a wealthy planter and tin-miner. Many historical events took place in this ancient building, one of which was the installation of the country's first King. After being renovated in 1988, it now houses a one-stop information centre offering a wide range of facilities to assist tourists in planning a holiday in Malaysia. Apart from providing counter services, the complex also holds cultural performances and theatrical shows in the mini-auditorium.
