Port Dock Brewery Hotel

Built in 1855, this excellent establishment has experienced a chequered history. Forced to close in the early part of the 20th century, the Port Dock is now the only pub in the state brewing beer on its premises. Brewery and cellar tours are conducted on request. The old stone hotel has been extended and supports an extensive bistro with modern furnishings. The hotel menu offers a range of meals, from warm chicken salad to Bosun's Pie! However, the four house-brewed beers are the main attraction. Hot-shot cocktails are also a specialty.

Henley Beach

Henley Beach is one of the two closest beaches to Adelaide central business district and is a favorite spot to cool off after work on hot summer evenings. Henley's bustling centre of beach side activity revolves around the grassy foreshore, jetty and alfresco cafe precinct. There are nine restaurants within the precinct offering a variety of cuisine including Thai, Greek, Italian and good old Aussie fish and chips. With all this temptation to overindulge, it is perhaps no accident that Henley Surf Life Saving Club is conveniently located just off the precinct.

Gray Line Tours & Packages

With a vast knowledge of South Australia, this award-winning international company incorporates the state's main attractions into full and half-day trips. Try cruising the River Murray and visiting the old town of Mannum for lunch, or the wine regions of the Clare Valley or the McLaren Vale's Wirra Wirra Wines. Perhaps your children would like the Warrawong Sanctuary Sunset Walk? These are easy tours that offer a little of everything for everyone.

Old Adelaide Gaol

Opened in 1841, the gaol closed its doors to prisoners in 1988 and now fills with curious visitors. Highlights include the grim hanging tower, cell blocks, grave area, displays of artifacts, plus the colonial architecture and gargoyles. Visitors can wander around as they please, or take one of the regular guided tours offered on Sundays from 11a to 3:30p. A souvenir shop sells postcards, mugs and trinkets. The gaol is found in the western Adelaide parklands near the River Torrens. Last entry to the gaol is admitted at 3.30 pm and one can explore the gaol on Sundays with a tour guide only.

Breakout Creek Wetlands

The Breakout Creek Wetlands has been designed both to restore natural habitat and to improve the water quality of River Torrens water discharging into the sea. Native trees and grasses have been planted to attract birds and insects while reed-covered shallows and deep pools have been designed to slow river flow. Whether cycling or walking along this pleasant stretch of River Torrens Linear Park, the wetlands provide several spots to rest and watch egrets and cormorants busy themselves fishing.

Port Dock Brewery and Cellar Tours

If you have never heard of "Port Dock Ale," "Black Diamond" or "Old Preacher," then prepare to be enlightened during a tour of the Port Dock Brewery. In-house brewer Stephen Nelsen will also introduce you to his exquisite milk stout as he steers you effortlessly through the selection of malted barleys at his fingertips. Brewing began here in 1986 and the Port Dock is now the only public house in South Australia making beer on its premises. Tours are free and are available on request or by booking through the hotel. Check website for more details.

Wat Rattanaprateep Vihara

Serving the Buddhist community of Adelaide now for 15 years the Wat Rattanaprateep Vihara is a touchstone for Buddhist practice. It is a place of tranquility, a space amongst the suburbs for quiet meditation and contemplation. An old converted house serves this purpose well, with many decorations of Eastern Buddhist philosophy adorning the walls. There is an extensive library covering Buddhist related topics. Borrowing is encouraged to enhance further understanding. Friendly teachers are on hand to aid in Buddhist practice. Meditation classes last for approximately one to two hours and you are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.
