Brodies Backpacker Hostel

Most backpackers have resigned themselves that their hostel will never be in the center of town, or on the main street. Brodies in Edinburgh proves even the most experienced travelers wrong. Located right on the Royal Mile, Brodies is located in an old stone building. Dormitories are large but beds are comfortable and this hotel is known for cleanliness. Many travelers appreciate the free Internet, and a small sitting room and kitchen round out the facilities.

Castle Rock Hostel

Many hostels in Edinburgh promise a historical building, but this can sometimes mean run-down. This is not the case at Castle Rock Hostel, which is housed inside of a big, old building complete with high ceilings. Dorms range from four to fourteen beds, but the common areas of this hostel are what people leave talking about. A room with a pool table, cinema-style TV lounge, and lounge with a piano and fireplace all provide great meeting spaces.

Princes St Backpackers

If you’re more concerned with atmosphere then modernity, Princes Street East Backpackers may be right for you. Some private rooms are available, and many travelers are drawn by the free Sunday night dinners (a great way to get to know your fellow travelers). There are some long-term guests at this hostel, which makes some people think of the hostel as cliquey, but you’ll get out of it what you put into it.

St Christophers Tourist Hostel

In many cities, a hostel located near the train station would mean a shady part of town. This isn’t the case in Edinburgh however, and St. Christopher’s Inn is a super-clean hostel located right in the old town. An extremely walkable city, there’s no reason to take buses at all when staying at this great location. Bathrooms are en suite in the 4 – 10 bed dorms, and showers are communal. It’s located right above a bar, meaning you already have a place picked out to begin your night and get to know fellow travelers.

Edinburgh Backpackers

Hostels that have a space for people to meet beyond the TV room are always appreciated. Edinburgh Backpackers has a games room with a pool table that serves as an icebreaker for travelers, especially those traveling alone. It’s located right on the Royal Mile, so whether you’re in Edinburgh to party or to scope out the history of the city, you’ll be in a prime location to do so. It won’t be the quietest hostel you’ve ever stayed at, but most people don’t come to Edinburgh looking for sleep.

High Street Backpackers

Another great hostel option for those looking for atmosphere is High Street Backpackers. 2 lounges with a tv and Internet access, as well as a good sized kitchen, make this option just off the Royal Mile very popular. The location is very near a variety of pubs and nightlife, and travelers seem willing to meet others and socialize. Some long term guests have turned into staff at the hostel, and can help direct you to interesting sights / attractions in Edinburgh.
