Old Sacramento, Sacramento, CA

This historical part of California's capital city is a walk back through time. The "goldrush era " of CA. comes to life from the horse drawn wagon/buggy rides to a walk along the Sacramento River waterfront. Lots of dining choices are available and great shopping for souvenirs, as well as one of the finest RR Museums in the world are all within this 3 square block area. The modern day history of Ca. began right here in Sacramento with the discovery of gold about 40 miles away on the American River at Coloma, CA. on Jan.24th, 1848.

Sutter's Fort State Historic

This is the 'mall' of the 1840's If you love this era of history, you'll not want to miss a visit to Sutter's Fort. If your traveling with children, they will probably like this stop because of the authenticity of the surroundings and usually a docent or two in period dress will be on site and interpreting some of the jobs of the era. They have a gift shop(trade store) with mostly historical items, books, tapes. No junk or trinkets.
