Windsor Castle

One of the Queen's three official residences, Windsor Castle is a short train ride from London's Paddington or Waterloo stations. The Castle itself is huge, so allow a few hours just for touring, and be advised that admission is a little pricey - about $25 per person - but it's worth it. There are shops and restaurants lining the streets between the train station and the castle, so there are plenty of places for shopping and lunch.

Brighton

It's hard to believe this seaside resort town is just an hour by train from London, it's gaining a reputation for its Bohemian atmosphere. Shopping is great in the North Laine area and there are tons of restaurants, including many vegetarian cafes.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a definite must-do for daytripping around London - the easiest way to get there is a bus tour from London, but you can also take a train from Waterloo (about 80 minutes of travel time) to nearby Salisbury, from there you can take the frequent buses to Stonehenge.

Oxford

Less than an hour North of London, Oxford is home to the oldest, and probably the most prestigious, university - it's actually made up of 39 official colleges spread within the city. I found it a bit boring, but my husband enjoyed it, as he loves photography - the buildings are spectacular and you can get some incredible pictures.

Stratford Upon Avon

Shakespeare's birthplace - a 2 hour trip from the London city center - worth a visit of an hour or two, particularly Anne Hathaway's cottage on the outskirts of town. The best way to see Stratford is part of a multi-stop day trip from London - as it may not be worth a trip on its own unless you are a Shakespeare fan.

Bath

Bath is a 2-1/2 hour bus trip from London, and there's alot to see - if you can get away for a weekend instead, it's worth it. The Roman baths are worth the trip, and you can easily spend a few hours, as the tour is more entertaining than it sounds.

Warwick Castle

A great family daytrip outside of London - you can spend several hours exploring Warwick Castle's towers, dungeons and state rooms and you get a real feel for the history there. There are also a number of exhibitions that feature waxworks, making it fun for children as well, particularly after dragging them through Stratford Upon Avon. The train ride from London is under 2 hours and the station is within a mile of the castle.

Hampton Court Palace

Given to the public by Queen Victoria, Hampton Court Palace has exquisite rooms, medieval kitchens, the famous maze and beautiful gardens. The palace is less than 5 minutes from Hampton Court station, which is only a 30 minute trip from Waterloo. You can take a boat trip there also which takes about 3 1/2 hours.
