Heart of England Way

Just as the name suggests, this route passes right through central England, the Midlands in fact. It goes for 161km through Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire but you could choose to do just segments of it, through the Cotswolds in particular that are very pretty. It also links to a number of other long distance walks.

The Fosse Way

The Fosse Way is another walking route through England, but this one was a Roman road. It linked Exeter in the south west to Lincoln in the Midlands. It also takes in highlights such as Bath and Cirencester in the midlands.

Dart Valley Trail walk

While short at just 16 miles, this has to be one of the prettiest regions in England to walk. Think of a patchwork quilt of fields, furrowed out by tiny country lanes and high hedges and you've got one of the quaintest areas in England. There are four miles of walking track on either side of the south Devon estuary and 8 miles up the valley to Totnes passing through Dartmouth and Kingswear and other riverside villages. The track also crosses the rather longer (600 mile) South West Coast Path at Dartmouth and Kingswear.

South West Coast Path

You're in for a long trudge on this coastal route which is over 600 miles from Minehead to Poole. But you can easily break it down into sections. The miles through Devon are particularly pleasant and cross with other tracks. There are many towns along this route and many are serviced by trains or buses so you could get on or off it in many places. The coastal landscapes are beautiful and you actually start on the edge of Exmoor National Park and end in Poole Harbour in Dorset.

Thames Path

This National Path follows the famed River Thames for over 180 miles from London to Kemble in Gloucestershire. You can walk it from either direction of course enjoying the peaceful villages, quiet cottages, historic sites and waterway action.
