Chonnyon Dongan Do

Chonnyon Dongan Do means "for a thousand years" in Korean. This is a popular place to indulge in fine cuisine and cocktails while enjoying live jazz performed by local and international artists. Lovers of seafood will relish the lobster or Sea Crawfish Set, while the juicy Lean Beef Ribs are also recommended. Dine in the glass-enclosed veranda with patio tables and umbrellas. During the evenings, the dim lighting and intimate ambiance provides a perfect setting for live jazz, and the wide stage comes alive with unforgettable cocktail shows.

Chongdong Theatre

Chongdong Theater was the first modern theater of traditional vocal music and plays in Korea. It is home to the Traditional Performing Arts Series, which features dance and music, including Samulnori—a four-member drum and dancing group, and wind and string instrument concerts. Performances run from an hour to two hours. Japanese and English subtitles are provided. After the show, visitors are encouraged to join the performers on stage. Notably, this area in downtown Seoul was recently designated a cultural district. Reservations are necessary because there are only 400 seats there.

Dong Soong Art Center

As the largest cultural center in the performing arts district of Daehangno, Dong Soong Art Center contains three large theaters, a smaller theater and a restaurant. This is the place to come for plays, movies and concerts. Occasionally, English or foreign language films are screened here. Some Korean language performances may have English subtitles. The schedule of current activities changes regularly, so call for more complete information.

Munye Theater

This theater, located right beside Maronnier Park in the performing arts district of Daehangno, is a very popular place frequented by many locals. Inside there are numerous small and medium—sized theaters, which are the setting for dramas and musicals throughout the year. There is a total capacity of 709 seats. Though there are no English subtitles here, occasionally non—verbal or English language performances by local or international troupes take place. Call for the latest schedules.

Daehangno (University Street)

A famous area in Seoul, this street got its name because it was once the site of Seoul National University. In 1975, the university moved to another area, but the street retained its name. Art galleries and theaters crowd the street. In addition, many free performances are given by street performers as well as production companies. There are several small one-room theaters where you sit so close to the stage that you almost feel you are part of the play. While Daehangno was once filled with student demonstrators, it has now matured into a hub for young people and artists alike.

Hakchon Blue

In the heart of the performing arts district of Daehagno, this small theater is a great place to go to see a musical or play in Korean, with clear English subtitles projected just above the stage. The energetic and exciting performances take place in the afternoon and evenings. While it is possible to get a seat if you show up at the door, it is advisable to reserve in advance.
