Best Western Arosa

This four-star hotel has an enviable location halfway along all the theaters, cinemas and restaurants. It's only a few minutes walk to the old town. You'll love it if you like being in the thick of city life. It's housed in a lovely old building that was totally renovated in 1995 to provide individually designed bedrooms with all the modern conveniences you could wish for, including soundproofing, fax and modem sockets. The restaurant specializes in Spanish and international cuisine. There's a shuttle service to the airport.

Abba Castilla Plaza

The bedrooms in this comfortable, modern four-star hotel are large, well lit, welcoming and soundproofed. It's located in the heart of the business district, on Paseo de la Castellana, with easy access to the airport, bus station, Chamart railway station and IFEMA Trade Centre. The surrounding area is full of good bars and restaurants. The hotel's own restaurant - Las Torres - serves Basque cuisine. You're not far from the famous KIO towers, Madrid's northern gateway.

Suecia

Bright, cheerful colors and antique Swedish furniture have been used to decorate its attractive bedrooms. Each floor is painted a different color and has a unique atmosphere. It's located in a quiet street close to some of the city's major attractions. You can easily walk from here to Puerta del Sol, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Prado Museum. The restaurant and cafeteria serve Swedish specialties. This four-star hotel opened in 1956 and was totally renovated in 1996.

NH Lagasca

This modern, functional three-star hotel has comfortable, well furnished bedrooms. They're light and bright and feature lots of wood. It's located among the smart shops in upmarket Salamanca district, just a 10 minute walk from Retiro Park and 20 minutes from the Prado and Thyssen museums. The adjacent Calle Claudio Coello is full of private art galleries. The hotel opened in 1992. The airport shuttle bus is close by as well.

NH Zurbano

A comfortable three-star hotel that's popular with businessmen and sports teams. You'll find it on a quiet street in the business district close to Paseo de la Castellana. Its bedrooms are simple but fully equipped with all you need for a pleasant stay. They're decorated in bright primary colors although the furniture is austere and functional. The hotel is spread over two separate buildings. The rest of Madrid is within easy reach by metro or bus.

Regente

This is an old-fashioned three-star hotel with antiquated decor and furniture in its spacious bedrooms. Its location between Gran Via and Puerta del Sol means that it's surrounded by shops, restaurants, cinemas, bars and theaters. It makes a great base for strolling through the old town on foot to visit sights like the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace. There are bus stops and metro stations nearby. Its Torres Bermejas restaurant is open for evening meals serving international cuisine and offers a flamenco show at the same time.

Orfila

A small, 19th-century palace converted into a five-star hotel, this is an exclusive place to stay, right in the heart of this cosmopolitan city. The bedrooms and public rooms have all been decorated with attention to detail to recreate the style and luxury of a period upper-class home. The original façade, entrance hall and main staircase have all been restored, and it's furnished with valuable antiques dating from the 1800s. Open since 1999, it has an enviable location on a quiet central street.

Bauzá

A sophisticated, avant-garde hotel this, for the bedrooms are comfortably and imaginatively decorated in pastel tones with elegant designer furniture. An open fire in the reading room is a welcome touch on cold winter evenings. It's located on a busy street in Salamanca district, surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants and banks and it's not far from Retiro Park. Prices do not include IVA (7%).

Hotel Ópera

All the bedrooms face onto the street and some have balconies with views of the Royal Palace, just 100m away. They're spacious, get lots of natural light and are decorated in a simple and welcoming fashion. In the hotel's restaurant - Café de la Ópera - the waiters sing arias as they serve your meal, accompanied by a pianist. There's no danger of getting bored during your stay with all the bars, restaurants, cinemas and shops in the vicinity. It's a compact, three-star, nine-story hotel that was built in 1964.

Gaudí

This modern four-star hotel offers well equipped bedrooms with bathrooms furnished in marble and equipped with power-jet showers. This early 20th-century building has comfortable and elegantly decorated public rooms. The service is excellent and the location on Gran Vía is ideal if you want to be in the thick of things.

El Coloso

You'll enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, the old-fashioned decor, the comfortable bedrooms and the courteous service offered in this central four-star hotel. The narrow street it's on could do with better lighting, but the location - close to bustling Gran Via and Plaza de España means that it's easy to get anywhere you want by metro, bus or on foot. You can easily walk to the shops around Puerta del Sol in one direction, or to the Opera House and Royal Palace in the other. There are many public parking spaces available nearby. Breakfast is included in the room rate on weekends.

Tryp Gran Vía

During the Spanish Civil War, famous newspaper correspondents like Hemingway, Orwell and Malraux all stayed in the simple, comfortable and brightly lit bedrooms offered by this traditional three-star hotel. It has an ideal central location on Gran V surrounded by shops, bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and historic monuments.
