Borough Market

After a wild London Friday night, Borough Market is the place to recoup with organic coffee and some top eats. If you're hip you may already be staying in Bankside. The rest of us will find Borough Market right across the street from London Bridge tube station. Mostly wholesale, the market has limited retail hours: Thursday and Friday afternoons, as well as Saturday from 9 to 4.

Market Hall

Remember the scene in Bridget Jones's Diary where Renee Zellweger/Bridget goes shopping for the ingredients for her ill-fated dinner party? This is where she did it. Saturday mornings see Borough Market thronged with foodies in search of the traditional and the progressive in English foodstuffs. There has been a market at this location for 2000 years; the present iron structure is Victorian.

Roast

At the back of Borough Market is the elevator to trendy and popular Roast restaurant. Here in the portico of the former flower market, New Britannia meets classic British cuisine. Traditional English roasts are served at lunch and dinner. Equally famous for their breakfasts, Roast is the place for a long, langorous weekend brunch. The view of St. Paul's Cathedral is available all day.

Eggs Benedict

Probably the best Eggs Bennie I've ever had, served with fresh orange juice and a side of fried mushrooms in a cute little copper pot. Interesting smoked fish dishes, too. A sunny relaxed atmosphere, comparatively upscale. Not really a place to bring the kiddies unless they've already had a lot of exercise. Popular...if you know you're going to go, it's best to have a reservation. This you can do online at www.roast-restaurant.com. By the way, "brown sauce" in England means steak sauce, i.e. HP.

London Bloomer

If you can't get into Roast, browse the Market for a loaf of organic London Bloomer bread here, some exotic cheese there. If you've brought your eco-friendly tote, round out your shopping with fresh fruit, some turkish delight and a few Melton Mowbray pork pies to go.

Market Porter

If you arrive later in the day, the Market Porter pub (just across from the south back entrance of Borough Market) is the place for pub grub and a few pints. The bar's exterior makes a brief appearance as a backdrop for the punchup between Colin Firth and Hugh Grant in the first Bridget Jones flick.

Flower stalls

Also near the back south entrance of Borough Market, flower vendors fuss over their fragrant English blooms: roses, daffs, veronica....aahh.

Millennium Bridge

Stroll west along the river and you'll pass the pedestrians-only Millennium Bridge, eyecatching in any weather.

Tate Modern

While away the rest of your lazy Saturday afternoon at the Tate Modern. It's as interesting for its transformation from its former life as a monster-sized power plant as it is for its collection of 20th century and contemporary art. A young and stylish crowd browses the Warhols and Picassos as well as some avant-garde--and occasionally disturbing--temporary exhibits. A happening place to people watch. Free admission draws the cool but broke. The top-floor cocktail lounge has panoramic views of the city but it's often standing room only.

Founders Arms

As the sun sets, walk west along the Thames from Tate Modern a little ways and you'll encounter the Founders Arms right on the water. Their patio is warmed by flaming braziers, especially picturesque at night and surprisingly effective at fighting chill. Ask and staff will lend you a blanket to snuggle in if you want your drink and munchies served outside. Just the place to watch London's night illuminations twinkle on.
