Dune 7 Namibia

Dune 7 near the town of Walvis Bay in Namibia is one of the largest sand dunes on earth. The dune is easily accessible and this makes it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Namibia. Take a hint, the best time to visit this dune is just before sunset. The desert can be very unforgiving. Once you reach Dune 7, time your climb so that you reach the summit as the sun sets. You will then not only climb during the cooler part of the day, you will also be rewarded by seeing an amazing sunset. This is a must do when in Namibia.

Plant Ivory Carvers Namibia

The Plant Ivory curio carvers in Namibia who can be found in most of the popular cities and towns in Namibia especially at the coast are definitely a must see when in Namibia. What makes these guys so great is that they can custom carve anything you ask them to do on the plant ivory. This makes for unique Namibian curios. The image attached shows just how easy and fast these guys can put just about any design on these plant ivory key rings. I asked one of the local artists to add the fring.com logo to the curio. It took him about 20-30min and I left with a very unique fring Namibian curio. These curios are not very expensive and it is worth every cent. Always good to see people trying very hard to make a living instead of begging.

Fishy Corner Seafood Restaurant

Leave your mark at the 'Fishy Corner Seafood Restaurant' in Henties Bay. This small family run seafood restaurant in Henties Bay serves great fish and chips and gives you the chance to leave your mark on there wall. Quite a few people have already left there mark over the years including the President of Namibia. This is a must see and do when in Henties Bay, Namibia. Oh btw you will need to pay to write.

Dry River beds

Exploring one or two of the dry river beds found near to Henties Bay in Namibia, is a great way to get an idea of just how dry this area really gets. Next time you pass one of these river beds, stop the car, and take a closer look. The dried out clay can easily be lifted and its almost like a huge jigsaw puzzle. If you do lift something please put it back in the exact same place when you go and remember to take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints. Talking about footprints, you should see the millions of tine animal footprints permanently etched into these dry river beds. Well worth a stop, makes for great pictures.

Kristal Galerie

The Kristal Galerie in Swakopmund in Namibia is a great place to go to brush up on your knowledge of the gems found in Namibia. You will be amazed at some of the beautiful things found in this dry looking country.

Sociable Weavers Namibia

One of the most beautiful things to see in Namibia are the huge nests built by the 'Sociable Weaver' a bird species found in Namibia and parts of South Africa. These little birds build, HUGE communal nests on anything that looks like a tree. This makes for great pictures and is a must see. Near the South African border you will see hundreds of these nests on the telephone poles, but in Namibia they are mostly found in tree's. In Namibia the nests are removed from telephone poles. In South Africa the nests are left and ingenious wire contraptions are placed on the telephone poles to try to control wear the nests are built on the poles.

The Ovahimba

The Kunene region of Namibia is home to the Ovahimba. This unique African tribe is a must see when in Namibia. The nice thing as that the Ovahimba woman come to Windhoek to sell curios so you don'y need to travel into the remote area's to see these unique people. The ladies expect payment for pictures so don't go snapping pictures without leaving a contribution. The only problem is that paying a lady to take pictures of her especially when she is topless feels slightly perverted. Anyway this is Africa and this is their culture and they are proud of it.

The Herero

The Herero is another tribe living in Namibia. The Herero population was seriously damaged during the 1905 Herero Wars in which about 100 000 Herero where brutally killed in what has now become known as a genocide. The German government has officially apologized for this atrocity carried out by its army but I am not sure if that fixes things. The indigenous populations of Namibia was forever damaged . Herero Woman can easily be identified by there attire. Great photographic opportunities can be found in Windhoek.

The San Bushman

The San Bushman of Namibia make for an interesting and educational visit while in Namibia. Although there are very few bushman living in the traditional way anymore, it is still a great experience meeting and interacting with these unique people.
