Jabez Clegg

The name might be unusual and it might on first glance look like a place of worship but, it is actually a very popular pub. Placed in a very prime spot, that is almost directly opposite Manchester University, it is crowded with students. The long wooden benches, loud indie music and general buzz in this converted church ensure Jabez Clegg's popularity amongst the student population. Popular as a tour venue with many established contemporary rock and indie bands, on occasion it is also home to some of the larger national club nights.

Funkademia

A small, but exceptionally busy night that concentrates on funk and soul, Funkademia has been literally ramming them in at the Attic club above the Thirsty Scholar pub for a long time now.Residents Dave Payne and Jon Bus Stop, plus special guests, keep things funky, soulful and simple. That's just the way the regulars like it, so make sure that you get there as early as possible otherwise you may miss out.

Big Hands

Big Hands is a quirky, fiercely independent take on the Manchester bar and clubbing scene. Owned by the people behind the infamous Temple of Convenience, it is in a perfect location on Oxford Road close to the universities. A long, narrow interior gives the place an almost subterranean feel as it opens out to a smallish dance floor and DJ booth to the rear. There is always something going on with regular indie and alternative dance nights, live bands and even the occasional off-the-wall cabaret evening.
