The Honolulu Zoo

An attractive flamingo pond greets you at the entrance of this 42-acre municipal zoo in Waikiki. Rare wildlife inside the lush park includes the Hawaiian nene goose, Francois monkeys and Galapagos tortoises. There is a children's petting zoo with llamas and a retired milk cow. Just before, during, and after a full moon, the zoo's special "Zoo by Moonlight" guided tour offers an uncommon glimpse of the habits of nocturnal animals; call for schedule. Admission: USD6 adults, USD4 kama'ainas, USD1 children 6-12 years old.

Waikiki Aquarium

Located just a few short blocks from Waikiki Beach, this is a great place to learn about Hawaii's amazing ocean world. You can see 400 different species at this small but mighty museum, including monk seals, sharks and sea turtles. A knowledgeable staff is on hand to narrate tours and answer questions. The aquarium has a good gift shop where you can ask about special events and excursions. It offers some terrific educational and community outreach programs.

Diamond Head State Monument

This crater of an extinct volcano got its name when Western explorers mistook calcite crystals they found there for diamonds. The historic trail to the 761-foot summit starts inside the crater and is an easy, but steep, 45-minute hike to the top. Stay on the trail, wear appropriate footgear and sunscreen, take along water and bring a flashlight to light your way through the tunnels. Those who reach the summit are rewarded by a spectacular 360-degree view of O'ahu. The tunnel gates close promptly at 6p. Admission: USD1 per person, USD5 per vehicle.

Aloha Beach Service

Head to the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel's private beach to show off your amateur surfing skills. And no harm if you stumble and fall, as only beginners are around for company. You can rent a surfboard from the Aloha Beach Service, who also provide a bodyguard, just in case you lose your balance while trying to impress! But if you are a complete novice, enroll yourself in the classes on offer. Go for snorkeling, if surfing has failed to excite you—equipment is rented out for that too.

Aqua Zone

Scuba diving in a hotel pool? But of course! This company entices potential new divers by offering an introductory class in a swimming pool at no charge. If you like it, try an ocean dive with an instructor. Aqua Zone's custom boat will take certified divers to two locations. The price includes transportation, all equipment and refreshments. Dive sites include sea caves, sunken ships, and even a World War II fighter plane! Diving enthusiasts should ask about brand new hotel packages. The company also books other aquatic activities including water skiing, jet skiing, para sailing, charter fishing, snorkeling, and even surfing. There is an additional location in the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel.

Aloha Parasail

This company offers more than one kind of thrill. While it's true that parasailing is the focus, Jet Skis are also available for people who like to keep a little bit closer to the ground (or in this case, the water). Scuba diving is also offered. If you've wanted to try parasailing though, this is a good bet; the company has been around since 1983. Call for pricing on parasailing or scuba adventures. Note: A credit card is required to hold, but cash is the only form of payment accepted. This allows the company to offer deep discounts much of the time. Reservations are required. Free door-to-door van transportation from Waikiki hotels is included.

Ala Wai Golf Course

Though some people have gripes with this super-busy course (the wait time is too long, tee times too scarce) it's widely thought to be a good value and a fun place to play. The greens are decently manicured and maintained, though they're not flawless. The 18-hole course has a par-70 rating. There is no clubhouse, but there's a driving range and a place to rent clubs. The location is on the border of the Waikiki district.

Star-Beach-Boys

Have the surfers in Hawaii managed to make a lasting impression on you? Now the only problem is that you don't know how to ride the waves yet. Don't fret; Star Beach Boys at the Kuhio Beach will help you out. Experts will train you. Watch yourself emerge from a novice to a great surfer under their guidance.

C&K Beach Services

Your elder sibling is too occupied, partying on the beach, to teach you some surfing skills! Don't let that dampen your spirits, as C&K Beach Services will come to your aid. They will make sure you learn to ride the waves with élan. Just make your way to the beachfront at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and leave the rest to the instructors.
