Alhambra

The most popular attraction of Granada is undoubtedly the extraordinary Alhambra. I felt like I needed an entire day (if not more!) to properly explore this Moorish palace. Many people breeze right through Granada, but there’s plenty to keep travelers occupied. Stunning displays of tile work and mosaics display the lasting influence of the Moors on Spanish style. Considered one of the most serene and Romantic places in Europe, I agreed from the moment I wandered the Alhambra.

Albaicín

The medieval streets of the Albaicin are known for their run-down and yet endearing quality. Petty street crime has been known to occur in the winding alleyways, so be careful and explore the Albaicin during the day. This area is the largest surviving Moorish barrio in Spain.

Moorish Baths

The Moorish Baths of Granada gives travelers a true glimpse into what the atmosphere would have been like when they were functional. Decorative mosaics complete the scene, and a peaceful tea toom makes a good stop during your Granada tour.

Sacromonte

With a strong gypsy heritage, Spain often has pockets of Gitano population that have been recognized for their powerful flamenco performances. The gypsy cave-quarter of Sacromonte will give you a glimpse of old caves in the old Moorish wall that was long home to these gypsies. A great flood drove people out of the caves in 1962.

Catedral and Capilla Real

While Granada is known for its Moorish monuments, a significant Christian monument exists in town as well. Capilla Real is a gothic style church that houses the tombs of Fernando and Isabel.

Lorca's Birthplace

A small village outside of Granada is home to Spain’s great poet, Federico Garcia Lorca. The town of Fuente Vaqueros has transformed the birthplace of the poet into a museum. Known for his love of his native Andalucia, a trip to the birthplace of Lorca will be a highlight for any literary buff.
