Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep

This famous and important temple dating from 1383 enjoys a prominent position in Chiang Mai, overlooking the city from its mountainside perch. It sits about 3,520 feet above sea level and is accessible via a steep naga staircase comprising around 300 steps. The temple has a huge golden chedi (spire), within which lie some holy Buddha relics that attract devotees from the world over. A walk around the grounds reveals a variety of colorful and fragrant flowers, and murals that depict Buddha's previous lives. Any visit to the city is incomplete without stopping by this temple.

Mae Sa Elephant Training Center

Come and watch the majestic elephants in one of Thailand's best elephant camps along the Mae Sa Valley. With shows every day , you can watch these mammoth creatures play football, among other tricks. There are also opportunities to ride an elephant through the local countryside, feed them with bananas and sugarcane, and take plenty of photographs. Also within the camp you will find an elephant nursery and a rafting center.

Wat Chedi Luang

This is a beautiful temple with an interesting history. In the 16th century, an earthquake partially destroyed the chedi (spire) at the top. It was partially reconstructed in 1992, but ever since only the 60-meter-high foundation remains. For 84 years, it housed the famous Emerald Buddha that now stands in Wat Prakaew in Bangkok. Rumors say it was here that King Mengrai, a former ruler of the north, was struck by lightning. Although the wat was recently cleaned and preserving agents were added to maintain its appearance, some parts are still in ruins.

Loi Kroh Massage Salon

This massage salon offers very good traditional full-body Thai massages, oil and herbal massages and foot and back massages. The staff is extremely kind and gentle, and you get your own private room. House calls can be made to your hotel if you so prefer. Massages like a traditional two-hour Thai massage (recommended) and for one hour (too quick to really enjoy!) are worth a try. The in-house massage school offers a 20-hour certified course in traditional massage techniques conducted by a private teacher.

Tha Pae Gate

This is one main gates to the old city of Chiang Mai, and a major landmark as well. Each corner and each main gate of the old city faces the eight main points of the compass, with one extra gate on the south side. Tha Pae Gate faces east, and is endowed with the astrological faculty of mula or prosperity. It was first called Pratu Chiang Ruak because it was situated near Chiang Ruak village when it was built in the reign of King Mangrai in 1296. Today this impressive looking Gate is a popular photo-taking spot for tourists.

Doi Inthanon National Park

This 1,005 square-kilometer Park located south of Chiang Mai City is, in parts, mountainous and wild. Species not found elsewhere in Thailand can be found here. Perhaps its biggest draw is Doi Inthanon, Thailand's tallest mountain. Standing at 2,565 meters, it offers one of the best places in Thailand for bird watching. Other attractions include Wachiratarn Waterfall, twin stupas dedicated to the king and queen and hill-tribe villages. On higher ground, one can see wild orchids growing. Trekking tours can be arranged through many agencies in Chiang Mai. This is a great trip by motorcycle.

Huay Tung Tao

This large man-made lake, located on the same road as the 700-Year Stadium, is a great city escape. You can take part in a variety of activities here, including fishing, swimming, paddling on surfboards and windsurfing. Around the edge of the lake are bamboo rafts, which can be hired for a small amount per day. It is also a scenic spot to enjoy a picnic and the natural beauty of the north. Primarily a destination for Thais, it presents a good way to get off the tourist track.

San Kamphaeng Hot Springs

If you are looking for an escape from the city, drive about 23 kilometers east beyond the small weaving village of San Kamphaeng. Here lies a quiet and scenic 40-acre park, beautifully landscaped and containing a range of flowers. Also found on the premises are a restaurant, ice-cream stand, mineral baths, a camping area and many picnic spots. Perhaps the most interesting feature here is the hot spring. The water comes from a deep source and is 100 degrees at the surface. You can even boil an egg in the water, at your own risk! A research station nearby provides more information.

Chiang Dao Cave

Unless you have your own transportation, it is best to book a trip at a travel agent to visit these beautiful caves. This area is very popular with Thais who, at present, outnumber foreigners by ten to one. Chiang Dao mountain and cave provides some of Thailand's most beautiful scenery. The mountain is the third highest in the country, but probably the most dramatic of all to look at. The sacred caves are filled with Buddha images belonging to Wat Tham Chiang Dao. The upper parts of the caves are the most easy to explore because lighting is installed there. If you wish to venture deeper, you should be accompanied by a guide and an oil lantern.
