The relatively large Mönchsteich (monk´s pond) is located near the Großensee. It is up to 6 feet deep in some places, but ideal for non-swimmers in the shallow area near the shores. There is hardly a breeze on the lake since it is surrounded by forest. You may have open fires on the beach here, so if you can´t afford a trip to Sweden, you might as well come here instead and bring your camping equipment. There is also a little restaurant on the lake´s south eastern shore. The Mönchsteich is a nice destination for a day trip and a break from the noisy city. It is just half an hour away from Hamburg´s city centre. Take the S4 to Rahlstedt, then Bus 364 and get off at Mönchsteich.
