The Governor's House Inn

South Carolina Governor Edward Rutledge was the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. He lived with his wife at this house on Broad Street, which has since become a National Landmark. Built around 1760, the building houses the quintessential bed and breakfast in Charleston. Innkeepers Karen Spell Shaw and Robert Hill Shaw are continuing three generations of lodging excellence. Edmondston-Alston House

Built by Charleston merchant Charles Edmondston, the three-story mansion is now a museum that shows the wealthy landed gentry lived in the early 19th century. Bought by Charleston Alston in 1838, guided tours are given through beautifully furnished rooms with period silver, antiques, books and paintings. A stroll on the second floor piazza offers a great view of Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter. During the Christmas season, a reenactment of 1861 Christmas Eve in Charleston, a period just before the Civil War, is performed. The mansion's former carriage house has been renovated into a lovely bed and breakfast. The current owner of the house resides on the third floor. - Natasha Lawrence
