Built in 1911, Hamburg Airport is Germany's oldest airport and was originally used as a take-off point for Zeppelins. Catering to some 10 million passengers a year, the airport is the fifth largest in the country and is being continually modernised. There are parking lots and garages located close to each terminal as well as a car park which is connected to the terminals by a free shuttle service. The airport is not connected to the metro, but a series of inexpensive express buses run from outside Terminals 1 and 4 to the city centre every 15 minutes. A taxi ride to the city centre should take approximately 30 minutes. The airport boasts countless facilities like kids' play areas, a medical centre, post office, currency exchange and conference rooms. Visitors can also watch take-offs and landings from the observation platform or view the impressive airport model in Terminal 1. 75 airlines includ ing Air Canada, Air France, Alitalia, American Airlines, British Airways, British Midland, Delta Airlines, JAL, KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, United Airlines take off and land everyday.
