The Maroela rest camp situated on the banks of the Timbavati River is a satellite camp of the larger Orpen rest camp. Maroela caters exclusively for guests with caravans and for campers. When I visited Maroela we stayed in our own tented accommodation. The camp has very low fences and wild animals like lions and leopards can easily enter the camp if they wanted too. I must say that when a lion roared in the distance during one of the evenings it was very scary being in a small tent. We had the unique privileged of living in this camp for an entire week while we repaired the broken side shafts of the family landrover. The camp has no Reception office, no shop or restaurant and only 20 camping sites. Maroela has electrical points, communal ablutions and cooking facilities, but no other modern amenities are available. This is the place to go for a true African experience. Don't forget to take your malaria medication and try not to walk around to much at night without a torch or you may be heading home in a box ;-)
