Started in 1879 with donations from local artists to preserve and celebrate Poland's distinct contributions to art, the National Museum originally focused on collecting modern Polish art. The focus soon expanded as enthusiasm for the project prompted large and valuable donations to the museum's collection. In 1950 the Museum absorbed the Princes Czartoryski Museum, Library and Archives. Today the holdings include the collections of the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) and the Emeryk Hutten-Czapski Museum. Currently the collection contains over 780,000 piecesand currently hosts many events and travelling exhibits. On most Sundays entrance to the museum's permanent collections is free.On the first Friday of every month, the museum is open until 8 PM.
