Day 3: Durango

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Day 1

Lodging: Hampton Inn Durango
Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. Sheer-walled canyons, towering monoliths, colorful formations, desert bighorn sheep and soaring eagles reflect the environment and history of the plateau-and-canyon country.

Voted one of the “Top Ten Most Exciting Train Journeys in the World,” the Durango & Silverton was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. The line was constructed to haul ore from the San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon became awestruck at the mountainous views. Re-live the experience once again on board this spectacular journey. Spend two nights in Durango.

• Breakfast at your hotel
• See the grand landscapes of Colorado National Monument
• Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Day 4: Durango

Mesa Verde National Park

Lodging: Hampton Inn Durango
Mesa Verde, Spanish for green table, offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over 700 years. Today, the park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. UNESCO has designated Mesa Verde National Park as a World Cultural Heritage Park.

• Breakfast at your hotel
• Guided tour of Mesa Verde National Park and the awesome Pueblo cliff dwellings

Day 5: Denver

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Next Stop 1880!

Lodging: Inn of the Rio Grande
Built in 1880 as the San Juan Extension of the Denver & Rio Grande, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad remains one of the most spectacular examples of steam era mountain railroading in North America. While a hundred years ago, the steamer hauled precious metals, today the steam locomotives carry passengers looking for adventure over high trestles, through dark tunnels and along narrow mountain shelves.

• Breakfast at your hotel
• Ride through the Rockies aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad with lunch
• Dinner

Day 6: Denver

Royal Gorge Scenic Railway

Lodging: Crowne Plaza Hotel
Billed as the “the most scenic train ride in North America,” you’ll pass under the Royal Gorge Bridge and along the raging Arkansas River. Will you spot bald eagles and red tailed hawks as they soar high above? Or the deer and sheep that roam in their natural surroundings? This fascinating 12-mile route follows the same trail as the old Denver and Rio Grande Western line.

• Breakfast at your hotel
• Travel through historic Canon City
• Royal Gorge Scenic Railway

Day 7: Colorado Springs

Pikes Peak Cog Railway “Ride to the Clouds!”

Lodging: Crowne Plaza Hotel
Your first taste of the wide open spaces begins at the Garden of the Gods, a 1300-acre park with glorious natural terrain. Then we’ll board the Swiss-made Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the highest cog railroad in the U.S., which stretches nine miles long as it vertically climbs to almost 8,000 feet. Story has it that Zalmon Simmons of The Simmons Mattress Company rode to the top of Pikes Peak on a mule and knew there had to be a better way. When someone suggested a railway, he provided the money to build it. Spend two nights in Colorado Springs.

• Breakfast at your hotel
• Visit the U.S. Air Force Academy and its Cadet Chapel (when available)
Garden of the Gods Park

This was our first bus tour and we enjoyed it very much. The tour director was very organized and knowledgeable and made the trip a real pleasure to be on. The tour went to a number of national park canyons that were amazing. And the train rides to the old mining towns were a trip back to the past. The scenery was absolutely incredible and the trip very relaxing. We made a lot of new friends and had a very positive experience with this trip.

Overall, the trip was great. I especially like the Dead Horse State Park, fantastic view. The Arches National Park was beyond anything I had imagined. The float trip on the Colorada was the least, simply because it was too calm.

Of the two train trips, I thought the Cumbres & Toltec was by far the better of the two. And the missions of Sante Fe was beautiful and spiritual. The best part of this trip to me was Mesa Verde!!! Absolutely amazing people. We had a very intelligent guide. He loved the history of these peolpe and that came across in his information, and I learned alot and was impressed with the beauty of the cliff homes. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

This trip was an awesome experience- my first guided tour. I was a last minute sign up- spur of the moment decision and it was great. The bus driver and tour guide were both so gregarious and truly enjoy their work. The made the trip especially enjoyable. We had only one person who complained about anything everyone else went with the flow and had a blast. Thank you for a great experience. The cost was extremely reasonable and the service , rooms and meals were just lovely.

A little too much "free time." Would like to have had more structured tour with a broader itinerary. Also, more breakfasts should have been included and the restaurant used for our farewell dinner in Savannah should be replaced. We were rushed and treated like "cattle."

The Jeckyll Island part of the tour was the best part. Beautiful accommodations, first-class hotel and treatment by hotel personnel.

We had never been on a "bus tour" - so I was a bit skeptical at first ------ However, it was a WONDERFUL experience.....and we had probably the BEST TOUR GUIDE - Sally from Phoenix - exceptionally knowledgeable - and an excellent BUS DRIVER from Denver . Most of our meals, and most of our accommodations were good. We especially enjoyed the FLOAT TRIP and the day at the Grand Tetons.

The Alamo was the highlight of the trip for us. The LBJ Library was next, except more time would have been appreciated. There was more walking in San Antonio than expected. Our seating for the parade on the riverwalk was not what the itinerary specified - therefore by the time the floats arrived at our location it was almost too dark to really see them very well.

I loved my trip to seattle and vancouver and victoria. I was not happy with my room mate. I would have enjoyed my trip even more if I was not with her. I think single people should not be assessed so much. A hotel room is going to cost the same if one person is in it or two. They could rent more rooms if there were only one person in a room. the hotels are actually loosing money and the tour companies would have more travelers if we didn't have to pay so much more.

We loved the trip. The tour guide in Winnipeg was inexperienced but managed to learn during our trip. You advertised an experienced tour guide. I believe for an expensive trip like this, perfection is the key. The guide in Churchill was great. The food and accommodations were wonderful. This trip is what I classify as a top notch adventure. We did not see as many bears as we hoped to because it was very early in the season. Guests should know that the Polar Rover is very bumpy. We both enjoyed the trip very much and would recommend this trip .

This was my second time for this tour. I thoroughly enjoyed it more this time as Sally Bell was exceptional as a tour guide--so knowledgeable--and Clay (our step-on guide) also is exceptional. Going to Bandalier was wonderful since we had to go through LosAlamo a sister lab to Fermilab where I once worked--Sally's knowledge about the geology of the area was wonderful--I learned a lot. Regardless of what you order to eat at a sit down restaurant or join others in a long line for a burrito the tab inc. tax is $10.00. BRING LOTS OF $. Had a wonderful time .
