About this tour

Explore San Francisco's diverse neighborhood and cultural gems; visit Muir Woods; and enjoy a catamaran cruise around Alcatraz, wine tastings in Sonoma, and the quintessential Napa Valley tour aboard the Wine Train on this weeklong journey.

The charms of the City by the Bay and the delights of California's wine country make this sophisticated San Francisco, Sonoma and Napa Valley tour a memorable experience. Take a private San Francisco Bay catamaran cruise with lunch... an exclusive guided tour of the Embarcadero's Ferry Terminal Building with a culinary expert... a private tram tour with lunch in a wine cave and a tasting at the Benziger Family Winery in Sonoma... and a Napa Valley tour through lush vineyards by rail with dinner and tastings aboard the celebrated Wine Train. Savor the best that northern California has to offer with Tauck!

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to San Francisco

A transfer is included from San Francisco Int'l Airport to Le Méridien San Francisco in the heart of the city's vibrant Embarcadero Center. Please join us this evening to meet your fellow California dreamers at our welcome cocktail reception and dinner.

Day 2: The beautiful City by the Bay

Get to know some of San Francisco's most famous landmarks and attractions during a morning sightseeing tour; from earthy Fisherman's Wharf to the beat generation's North Beach to the tortuously twisted Lombard Street, see the City by the Bay from literally top to bottom. Sail around San Francisco Bay on a private catamaran cruise for a 360° view of sights such as Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge, with lunch featuring the famous sourdough bread from Boudin's Bakery – it's magic! Take a look at San Francisco's elegant Victorian, Italianate and Queen Anne-style architecture this afternoon, before exploring as you please for the rest of the day.

Day 3: San Francisco treats

Your taste buds are in for a treat today as we sample some of San Francisco's noted cuisine at its source. Join a local epicurean concierge to discover the swirling sights, sounds and scents at the bayfront Ferry Terminal Building in the Embarcadero and its famous Farmer’s Market on a customized culinary experience – the perfect prelude to a Sonoma and Napa Valley tour focusing on those superb California wines! Spend the remainder of the day and evening at leisure in this remarkable city.

Day 4: An ancient forest and a peaceful valley in wine country

Heading out to wine country today, the towering, primordial Coast Redwood trees of Muir Woods National Monument inspire awe as you gaze up at them in wonder. A guided visit to this forest of living national treasures, reputed to be among the oldest living things on earth, reveals their stories and their secrets. After some free time in charming Sausalito, continue on through the Sonoma Valley to the Viansa Winery – styled after the vineyards and villas of Tuscany – for a private tour and tasting. Today's final destination is The Lodge at Sonoma, A Renaissance Resort & Spa, your luxurious home for the next three nights of your Sonoma and Napa Valley tour, where you can join the hotel's sommelier for a wine education class prior to dinner this evening.

Day 5: All aboard the Wine Train for a Napa Valley tour

Travel to the town of Napa this morning, where you'll board the celebrated Napa Valley Wine Train. Dine aboard a faithfully restored 1917 Pullman Dining Car – and sample local wines, of course – during a delightful 36-mile excursion through the valley's verdant vineyards to quaint St. Helena. Later, you may choose to stroll around the charming mission town of Sonoma with your Tauck Director, or just relax and enjoy all the amenities offered by your resort.

Day 6: Experience the vineyards from within or above

Pay a mid-morning visit to the Benziger Family Winery for a private tram tour of the winery, a tasting and lunch in a wine cave.... what a great opportunity to see firsthand how fine California wine is produced! Or, if you choose, float gently above the region's lush vineyards aboard an optional, early morning hot air balloon adventure (available for an additional $275 per person), complete with a champagne breakfast; guests choosing the balloon option will join the others at Benziger Family Winery for lunch. Back at your resort this evening, cap your Sonoma and Napa Valley tour with a wine and cheese reception followed by a farewell dinner.

Day 7: Journey Home

Your San Francisco, Sonoma and Napa Valley tour ends at San Francisco International Airport. A transfer is included from The Lodge at Sonoma to San Francisco Int'l Airport, approximately 45 miles. Please allow a minimum of two hours for flight check-in formalities. We wish you a safe and pleasant journey home.

A Tauk tour will exceed your expectations. Everything is

expertly handled and all you need to do is relax and enjoy all the wonderful experiences that have been planned for you with a tour director that will immediately offer any advice or assistance you may need.

My husband and I have been married for 53 years and he had open-heart surgery in April of 2009. In August we went with Tauk on the San Francisco tour. Having traveled with Tauk before, we had no anxiety about making this trip and we enjoyed the itinerary, the people we met

and returned home refreshed and looking forward to our next Tauk tour.

The entire trip was well done-I would extend it though - add a day to Lake Louise, so we could be there a full day - that is a MUST! I would also add a day to Jasper - take nothing away! We have also done the Canyonlands and Tetons with you. AWESOME trips!

A thoroughly enjoyable vacation. All aspects of the trip were planned to see that my wife and I had a good time. I personally would have wanted to modify some of the times spent at various locations along the way but all in all everything was top shelf and very enjoyable. We met many fine folks from around the country and they seemed to have the same experience.

Fabulous tour leader - extremely knowledgeable.Felt it was a waste of time going all the way to Carlsbad would rather have started nearer to White Sands National Monument and had an extra day in Santa Fe as there was so much to do there. going to a morning of balloon festival was an added bonus and was delighted that we were taken there even though not on Itinerary - it is good that Tauck takes advantage of local events.

Wonderful trip. Tour guide, John Kneiper, was the best 5 star. As was our bus driver, Lyle Gilbertson, was 5 star.too. Sorry to here you are not running this tour for a while. Accommodations were 5 star. This was our 8 Tauck tour and everyone, except one to Nova Scotia, were the super. Tauck was very good about giving us a credit for our problems with the Nova Scotia trip. You don't have to worry about word of mouth. I tell everyone about you as you are the only tour my husband and I will take. You have us spoiled.

I hope you stay in business as long as we're alive and you keep up the wonderful work. Much success!

Again, a top flight tour. Except for the fog, though California would not be California without fog, the trip could not have been better. We saw places that we would not probably been able to see -- Pebble Beach, behind the scenes at the San Diego Zoo. Highly recommend the trip, our third one with Tauck and more to come.

It was a wonderful trip and the other guests were very pleasant. If I have a reservation it is perhaps that in its efforts to show us as much as possible I often felt that itineraries were planned in a way that left litle time to really visit visit some of the places we stopped at. For instance It is no use arriving at 2 p.m, being told of the wonderful hikes and walks and then not having enough time before the evening meal to do any of them. For older guests it is also important that they realise just how tiring getting on and off buses can be, especially if they have high steps. Tauck service is in general excellent, although my luggage did get forgotten in one Lodge and almost in a second hotel. It was only when I decided to check after the first incident that I discovered it was again on the point of being left behind. I then constantly monitored my luggage which did spoil things a bit. But, overall, it was a wonderful holiday.

Beyond the five star ratings given in each of the categories above the most impressive feature of the trip was what must have been detailed planning that took us to unusually interesting spots along the route such as the top of the ski run at Whistler, the trip onto the Athabasca glacier, the falls of the Athabaska river,Moraine lake,Mud lake, Buchart gardens, Mount Robson. Every little side tour was an exciting surprise. All in all his was the trip of a lifetime.

Great trip, we tell everyone. Photographed three grizzly bears swimming.

Accommodations great as usual with Tauck. Would have liked to stay at the Princess in Victoria. Oh well, can't do everything!

Food was really good except for Emerald Lake Lodge. I would probably skip the Lodge luncheon, however, not the lake.

It was a great trip, my third with Tauck, and have to say the guide was the best I've ever had. He was amazing! He was so knowledgeable it was unbelievable.

Itinerary was really fun, loved the train ride.

We loved the trip as we had wanted to take this trip for years and seeing the Rockies was incredible. One night on the train was enough though as it was very confining after the spacious rooms we enjoyed in the Fairmonts.Alot of the fellow travelers complained loudly about the tour director but we thought he was fine. There was alot of pressure to give him a nice tip contrary to the policy that tips were not expected. We also tipped the drivers and we were fine with that. But don't promote the fact that no tip is expected when it clearly is expected. We loved the overall experience and will take more Tauck Tours if good discounts are offered as the competitors are offering.
