stunning architecture as you spend two nights each in Budapest and
Prague in 5-star hotels, checking out remarkable bridges, cathedrals,
museums, and grand Habsburg palaces... it's truly a cruise to remember!

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Prague

A transfer is included from Prague's Ruzyne Airport to the Prague Marriott Hotel. Meet your fellow travelers and Tauck Directors for a preview of your Danube River cruise at tonight's grand kickoff event – a royal welcome reception, tour and dinner at 16th-century Lobkowicz Palace at the Prague Castle, accompanied by a classical quartet!

Day 2: The legacy of many centuries in Prague

Start today's exploration of Prague in the ancient Hradcany (Castle) district, where you'll see 1,000-year-old Prague Castle's complex of palaces, courtyards and gardens; visit the Cathedral of St. Vitus and enjoy a Tauck Exclusive – a private tour of Strahov Monastery's grand Baroque libraries. You're free to spend the afternoon as you please in Prague, or join us if you like on a walking tour of Prague’s Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's home to the Astronomical Clock and Tyn Church – along with Charles Bridge and Wenceslas Square. Sample the culinary pleasures of Prague with dinner on your own tonight; the city's many fine restaurants and cafés feature a wide range of cuisines... and some of the best schnitzels, goulashes, strudels, dumplings and beer the region has to offer.

Day 3: • Ancient Regensburg / Danube River cruise begins

Drive to the well-preserved German cathedral town of Regensburg, whose roots stretch back to Roman days. Your local guide leads you on a walking tour that includes the Steinerne Brücke, a medieval stone bridge over the Danube; the Gothic Dom St. Peter; the 15th-century town hall; and the remains of the town’s Roman wall. Enjoy lunch on your own – perhaps opting for some of the town's celebrated Bavarian sausage – before boarding the riverboat in Regensburg to launch your 7-night Danube River cruise.

Day 4: • Spend the day in lovely Passau

Enjoy the views from your riverboat's sun deck, lounge, or the windows of your outside cabin. Your first port of call is Passau, Germany; accompanied by a local guide whose love for Passau is evident, take a walking tour through the cobblestone streets of this Baroque town renowned for its lovely stained glass and nearly 100 churches. See the Altes Rathaus, the old town hall with 15th-century origins, murals on the façade and a glockenspiel in the tower. Return to the riverboat for lunch as you cruise to Linz, Austria.

Day 5: • Salzburg sights or relaxation in Linz

With your riverboat docked in Linz, you can choose to enjoy this Austrian port city, or take a full-day excursion to old Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's hometown on the Salzach River. The day trip includes visits to Mozart's birthplace and beautiful Mirabell Gardens, and a guided walking tour through the historic district of ornate church towers and grand palaces. Back aboard the ship, enjoy dinner and a classical music performance this evening.

Day 6: • Wachau Valley cruise and picturesque Dürnstein

Your Danube River cruise continues through the Wachau Valley, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved medieval landscapes. Dock in Dürnstein and take a walking tour amidst its cobblestone streets, 16th-century houses, and former Augustinian monastery; if you like, hike up to the ruins of a hilltop castle above the town where Richard the Lionhearted was held for ransom during the Crusades. Enjoy some free time in this charming riverside town, and sample the fruits of the Wachau Valley vineyards surrounding it during a wine tasting at a local tavern.

Day 7: • Music and more in Imperial Vienna

Get an overview of the longtime capital of the old Habsburg Empire and one of Europe's grandest cities – Vienna, Austria – with a morning sightseeing tour of this historic city that includes the Ringstrasse, the Opera House, City Hall and Parliament. Then choose a tour of Schönbrunn Palace, built to rival Versailles, or a special visit to the Imperial Silver Room inside the Hofburg, now Austria's presidential residence. Tonight, indulge in a bit of royal treatment with a gala, private Imperial Viennese evening at a traditional palace in the heart of the city, featuring a sumptuous dinner and live Viennese music... an unforgettable highlight of your Danube River cruise!

Day 8: • Along the Danube to ancient Slovakia

Pursue your own interests this morning in glorious Vienna – which boasts over a hundred museums of all kinds – and then return to the riverboat to continue your Danube River cruise to Slovakia. Gliding along the "river of kings," admire the pastoral scenery and immerse yourself in Slovak culture aboard the riverboat, as you enjoy a taste of regional cuisine at dinner – and join in as Slovakian folkloric entertainers in traditional costumes perform for you.

Day 9: • Baroque in Bratislava

Wake up today in ancient Bratislava, capital of modern Slovakia – and, strangely enough, the long-ago capital of Hungary! Your local expert shares insights and anecdotes about this beloved city on a guided walking tour; view several Baroque Habsburg-era palaces, the Opera House, Slovak Philharmonic Hall and St. Martin's Cathedral; visit the 13th-century Old Town Hall; and savor some delectable Slovakian pastry at a local café. After some exploring on your own, return to the riverboat and celebrate your memorable cruise with the Captain and crew at the  Captain's shipboard farewell reception and dinner tonight.

Day 10: Goodbye, riverboat... hello, Budapest

Your extraordinary Danube River cruise ends this morning in Budapest, Hungary, split into the sections of Buda and Pest by the Danube River. After disembarking your riverboat and bidding the crew farewell, explore the city's Buda side on a walking tour of Castle Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; see Fishermen’s Bastion with its Neo-Romanesque design, and admire the stained glass windows and centuries of history in Matthias Church. After lunch at a local café, spend the rest of the day pursuing what interests you most in Budapest; later, dig into dinner at your choice of select city restaurants. Note: Matthias Church may be closed on some departures due to services.

Day 11: Discover the landmarks of Pest

The Pest side of the city reveals itself to you today on a visit to Heroes’ Square – bounded by some of the finest architectural works in Hungary – and sightseeing including the spectacular Parliament building and tree-lined Andrassy Avenue. There may be some surprises in store on a special visit to the opulent State Opera House, opened in 1884, with its gilded vaulted ceiling, murals, royal boxes and three-ton chandelier. Conclude your Danube River cruise adventure by spending the rest of the day exploring what interests you most in Budapest; you may want to stroll along fashionable Váci Utca, one of the city's grandest boulevards. Sample Budapest's wide variety of cuisines as you enjoy lunch and dinner on your own in a city abounding with fine restaurants and romantic cafés.

Day 12: Homeward bound

Tauck's delightful Danube River cruise ends in Budapest, Hungary. A transfer is included from the InterContinental Budapest to Budapest's Ferihegy Airport. Allow 2 1/2 hours for flight check-in.

Our tour director was fantastic and the sites were great. Two problems:

1. Because of the Spanish tradition of eating after 8:30 p.m. and the requirement of starting early in the day to accomplish seeing the sites and also because of constant need to pack up and unpack, the tour was a bit more stressful than the unbelievalby wonderful Tauck tour on the Danube from Budapest to Prague in 2008.

2. Running into the difference for luggage weight restriction within Spain as oppossed to flying into Spain cost us an addition 100 Euros. We were particularly vulnerable since we had to pack for a two conference and a 3 day wine country tour prior to joining the Tauck tour.

This tour was packed...44 people. Do not ever want to do that again. Before I take another Tauck tour, I would want to know how many are going to be on it. This was our third Tauck tour. We had fun because we traveled with another couple on this tour but for an upscale(?) tour, it wasn't with that many people on it. We had fun with Debbie Holmer in Italy and Michael Furillo in Australia but this trip to Ireland not so much.

Wonderful trip but should be marketed toward healthy, fit, middle aged or below. Our tour guide, Birgit, was the best! Us old folks struggled to keep up and she had the compassion and patience to keep our spirits high! The itinerary was superb and we especially loved Carrara! That was awesome! Our tour guide, Umberto, told us "we were going to meet the Angels" and he was right! After bicycling in Lucca, we came home and bought ourselves bikes! Now everyday we cruise the neigborhood. Another great Tauck tour...we are never disappointed.

The itinerary was great but there was rarely enough time to do more tnan the tour and eat lunch. The rooms were exceptionally small, and being at the back of the boat very noisy. The food was OK- nothing more. The tour director, Stephen, was a miserable man whom most all the passengers disliked. He was haughty, not accomodating, and rarely could be found. He certainly did nothing to make the trip enjoyable!!! I would never take another riverboat trip.

Fabulous tour! Every aspect of this tour was fantastic. The scenery was unforgettable and well arranged for viewing! Every meal was a wonderful surprise, prepared and presented perfectly! Our tour director was great, very informative and helpful in every way. I truly loved Capri, the hotel was lovely and the food was spectacular. I truly enjoyed Rome and our private tour to St. Peter's and the Sistine Chapel. I was able to absorb so many details that I never would have seen in a crowd. It was quite an humbling experience. For other guest that choose the Amalfi coast, please expect scenery that will take your breath away. You must see it in person for the awesome beauty of the Amalfi Coast. I found the people of southern Italy to be very friendly and they take much pride in making you feel welcome. It is truly an unforgettable place to travel!!!! I fell blessed to have made this journey.

Warsaw-Krakow was a pre-tour for a Central Europe cruise. We had local guides arranged by Tauck, and that worked out fine. Only one other couple was on the trip with us (they had already done the cruise), so we almost had a custom tour. Food is on your own. Local guides were very proud of their cities. Warsaw is a testament to the resiliency of the Polish people. Krakow is a beautiful city with a wonderful central square with great day and night life. We visited Copernicus' university! Auschwitz is the skeleton of a human-created Hell in the midst of a Garden of Eden. Warsaw-Cracow is a great addition to a cruise, but do it first so you are more energetic about touring. It is worth it.

Are first tour with Tauck was beyond are wildest dreams. We simply cannot say anything but good things about this tour. An example is arriving in Paris, we immediatly went for a magnificent lunch at the Tower Montparnasse restaurant called Le Ciel De Paris, with its wonderful spectalular view of Paris and the Effiel Tower. Nothing was missing from this tour.

So we took a riverboat cruise the next year (Amsterdam to Budapest on the Swiss Sapphire in 2008). We simply had another fantastic trip and cannot find the right words to describe the company and its staff. We are now booked for are 3rd tour with Tauck in 2010 to Japan and we are sure that it will be another class act by Tauck. Thank you Tauck and staff.

We had problems because of low river levels and missed many important stops. It was not handled very well by the Tour Director. She seemed frazzled and frustrated. She was snappy at times.

We missed several important stops and it was very disapointing. At one point we were told by the Director that we would be going to Salzburg Austria to make up for our missed stops, but we didn't, and it was never mentioned again.

We had to pack our bags and change ships in the middle of the trip. We were glad to change, but it was a huge inconvenience.

The Tour Directors that spent the days with us were excellent. They made up for many problems. They were informative and made the trip fun.

The food was satisfactory at best. The ship and our accommodations were excellent.

When we returned home we fully expected to recieve some sort of acknowledgment of our dsapointing trip in the form of a future discount or some sort of credit. We recieved nothing. Frankly we are shocked at this. Our travel agent has contacted Tauck to let them know what we had expected still nothing.

We had planned to book a future trip with Tauck to either Autralia or Asia. We have recently decided to book our trip with another company.

This was a fabulous trip. The intinerary was fantastic and I didn't feel rushed in any city or at any time on the tour. I particularly liked that during this tour each hotel stay was at least two nights. I enjoyed all of the Tauck extras - piano recital, etc. Anne Marie was a great tour director - very helpful, good sense of humor, informed and wonderful with making everyone feel at ease. I love taking Tauck tours, because I know that everything will be taken care of for me and I can relax and enjoy. I was a single traveler on this trip and I made wonderful new friends and never felt as though I was on my own at all. The one thing that future guests should know is that at certain times of the year the weather can be unpredictable and if they are going in the fall they should make sure to bring at least some very warm clothes.

My sister and I were traveling with my 87 year old father and my 11 year old nephew--we are all fairly experienced travelers (this was 4th Tauck tour, and I have lived abroad for a few years in the past), so we wanted something a little off the beaten track. I thought Central Europe might be a little grim and Soviet-block (what can I say? I was last in Prague before the Wall fell, so I have "old-fashioned" ideas. And my Dad is a WWII vet). But I was so surprised! Although we did take trips to where history had been grim, the present-day country is lively and absolutely LOVELY. The people were fantastic. Warsaw had a wonderful town center, totally rebuilt from the destruction of WWII and looking economically sound and thriving. Countryside was beautiful. Krakow was an exciting medieval center and university town. Budapest was a larger, beautiful city, on par with Vienna these days. Lots of arts and commerce. Vienna is always worth a visit. And Prague is a must-see, these days! I would highly recommend the tour. A wonderful mix of history and interesting sites and great cafes and restaurants. Definitely a must-see for those who want to see a bit more of Europe, beyond the main capitals that everyone sees.

I would strongly recommend that potential guest do their homework before choosing a tour company and recognize that when they do a true orange to orange comparison Tauck offers far more value dollar for dollar than those companies offering optional tours to be paid in addition to the basic tour. Also they should look closely at the size of the tour groups - there's nothing intimate about 130+ travellers!!
