    Day 1: Arrive in Vancouver

    Your hotel is located within easy walking distance of Vancouver's lively Gastown and Stanley Park. Meet your Tauck Director and travel companions at the welcome reception followed by dinner.

    Day 2: Vancouver highlights and a ferry to Victoria

    A guided sightseeing tour including Chinatown, Prospect Point, historic Gastown and Stanley Park introduces you to the history and vibrant cultural life of Vancouver, site of the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics. Later, hop aboard a ferry for a cruise to Victoria, British Columbia's capital, where you'll spend two nights at the city's only 5-star hotel, the Hotel Grand Pacific in a balconied, Grand Harbor View room overlooking Victoria's beautiful waterfront.

    Day 3: Victorian ways with The Butchart Gardens and afternoon tea

    Discover a little piece of England on a visit to The Butchart Gardens in Victoria, encompassing 55 acres of breathtaking floral beauty in Japanese, Italian, Rose and Sunken show gardens dating back to the early 20th century. Later, indulge in a beloved English ritual – and a Victoria tradition – with Afternoon Tea in the restored Tea Lobby of The Fairmont Empress on the Inner Harbor. Explore on your own for the rest of the day and evening.

    Day 4: The BC Museum, flightseeing and all aboard the Canadian

    The many treasures of one of the world's finest museums of natural and cultural history are yours to explore on a visit to Victoria's Royal BC Museum. Then return to Vancouver via floatplane in late afternoon, with spectacular views over the Gulf Islands. Tonight, board the sleek, newly restored rail cars of VIA Rail's The Canadian, and celebrate the start of your overnight journey to the Canadian Rockies with a champagne toast. Spend the night on the train while speeding across some of the most breathtaking scenery in North America.

    Day 5: To the Canadian Rockies by rail

    The vistas are nothing short of spectacular from Tauck's private domed observation car – reserved for Tauck guests only – aboard The Canadian, as your western Canada tour continues across British Columbia, where towering peaks and glaciers highlight the route. Cross the Continental Divide into the province of Alberta; arrive in Jasper National Park for a two-night stay at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

    Day 6: A day as you please in Jasper National Park

    The day is yours to spend just as you wish among the carefully protected ecosystems – and "photographer's paradise" of Jasper National Park, where optional choices at your resort (at additional cost) include horseback riding or tennis. Rent a canoe or paddleboat on Lake Beauvert; go on a trail ride or a guided nature walk; play a round of golf on a top-rated course; or visit the historic town of Jasper on your own. This evening, a presentation by a Parks Canada official precedes dinner at your choice of restaurants at the lodge.

    Day 7: Icefields Parkway & glacier ride

    Drive the Icefields Parkway, featuring jaw-dropping views of mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, and snowfields around every turn. Watch for bears, elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats, especially in the spring and fall. View Athabasca Glacier flowing from the Columbia Icefield, and take a memorable climb across the glacier's surface on an Ice Explorer, a specially designed vehicle. Arrive at your chateau-style hotel on the edge of Lake Louise overlooking Victoria Glacier, for a night in a Lake View room.

    Day 8: Lake Louise at leisure, and on to Banff

    Travel via the Bow River Valley to Moraine Lake; after lunch at the Emerald Lake Lodge, continue through Kicking Horse Pass into Yoho National Park. See Spiral Tunnels, a century-old railway engineering feat, and Natural Bridge, a rock formation over the Kicking Horse River, before setting off to The Fairmont Banff Springs, a Rocky Mountain icon since the 1880s, for a two-night stay inside Banff National Park; enjoy dinner at leisure at your resort tonight.

    Day 9: Bow River float trip and a day of resort leisure

    Embark on a float trip along the Bow River, then spend the rest of the day at leisure at your grand hotel, built more than a century ago to resemble a Scottish baronial castle. There's a full range of optional activities (available at additional cost) to try. Perhaps take a guided nature walk; book a treatment at the renowned Willow Stream Spa; ride the scenic Banff Gondola; or enjoy horseback riding, a round of golf, or the museums in the town of Banff. Join us this evening for our farewell dinner.

    Day 10: Journey home

    Travel from Banff National Park to Calgary, Alberta this morning, approximately 80 miles. Your western Canada tour and mountain adventure ends at 10:00 AM at Calgary International Airport. Direct flights to the U.S. will clear U.S. customs in Calgary. Tauck can arrange additional nights at The Fairmont Palliser for guests wishing to extend their stay; an airport transfer is included for these bookings.     Day 1: Alberta travel adventure – Kananaskis country

    For guests who are spending the previous night in Calgary, an airport transfer from Calgary International Airport to The Fairmont Palliser is included; pick-up time today will be 1:00 PM at The Fairmont Palliser. Best of the Canadian Rockies begins with a journey from Calgary International Airport that takes you across the last few miles of Canadian prairie to Kananaskis country, the foothills of Canada's Rocky Mountains. Get to know your fellow travelers at the welcome cocktail reception and dinner this evening; your Signature Club room at the Delta Lodge at Kananaskis offers you exclusive concierge services, complimentary high-speed Internet access, and access to the Signature Club Lounge.

    Day 2: Spectacular glacial lakes

    From Kananaskis, head high up into the Canadian Rockies and cross the Continental Divide through Kicking Horse Pass on a day of Alberta travel on which you'll see three of the most beautiful lakes in North America. Enter Yoho National Park, where Emerald Lake sparkles with the surrounding peaks reflected in the green waters. See the Spiral Tunnels, a century-old railway engineering feat; Natural Bridge, a rock formation over the Kicking Horse River; and Moraine Lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks (providing the weather conditions are right). Arrive at your chateau-style hotel on the edge of Lake Louise overlooking Victoria Glacier in Banff National Park, where you'll enjoy lake-view accommodations.

    Day 3: Along the Icefields Parkway, an Alberta travel highlight

    Enjoy a free morning to take in the amazing views while walking around gorgeous Lake Louise. After lunch, set off along the Icefields Parkway, featuring jaw-dropping views of mountains, waterfalls, glaciers, and snowfields around every turn. Watch for bears, moose, elk, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats – especially in the spring and fall – en route to your lodge in the heart of Jasper National Park. During your two-night stay, you'll have an opportunity to attend a presentation by a Parks Canada official to hear the history, legends and folklore that are the very essence of Canada's magnificent national parks.

    Day 4: Explore Jasper your way

    Continue your Alberta travel experience with a day spent exploring magnificent Jasper National Park with your choice of an included "Jasper Your Way" discovery tour. You may choose from among an "Experience Maligne Valley" tour offering a guided walk along the beautiful Maligne Lake shoreline; a "Wildlife Discovery Tour," joining a wildlife interpreter to search for bear, elk and more; an Athabasca River whitewater rafting adventure led by Rocky Mountain River Guides; or a trip on the Jasper Tramway through alpine tundra, leading to the interesting town of Jasper. Or you may want to engage in some of the optional activities at your lodge (available at an additional cost) including horseback riding, biking, tennis, golf, fishing or boating.

    Day 5: Climb along Athabasca Glacier aboard an Ice Explorer

    Retracing your route along the Icefields Parkway, view Athabasca Glacier on the Columbia Icefield, the largest ice cap in the Canadian Rockies. Take a memorable ride across the glacier’s surface on an Ice Explorer, a specially designed vehicle, for a close look at the glacier's geological features -- another highlight of your Alberta travel adventure; nearby are powerful Athabasca Falls. Arrive in Banff National Park, the first national park in Canada – your grand hotel, one of the Rockies' finest resorts, was built more than a century ago to resemble a Scottish baronial castle.

    Day 6: The incredible bounty of Banff

    Today is yours to explore Banff National Park and environs as you please. You may wish to check out the village of Banff, which, with its spectacular scenery and trendy shops and boutiques, has grown over the decades to rival the chic alpine villages of the American Rockies. Tauck includes a Heritage Pass that grants admission to three museums in Banff – the Whyte Museum, the Cave & Basin National Historic Site (where Banff's hot springs were first discovered), and the Banff Park Museum. There are also many optional activities to choose from (available at an additional cost) in Banff National Park itself. You can ride the Banff gondola, take a guided nature walk, go horseback riding, mountain biking, or canoeing on the Bow River. Play a round of golf at your world-famous resort, perhaps book an alpine aromatherapy massage at the Willow Stream Spa, ranked among the top spas in Canada. The week comes to a conclusion tonight at a memorable farewell wine tasting reception that is both educational and entertaining, followed by dinner.

    Day 7: Journey home

    Travel back to Calgary, approximately 80 miles. Your Alberta travel adventure ends at 10:00 AM at Calgary International Airport.     Day 1: Calgary High and Low

    Our adventure begins in Calgary in the foothills of the Rockies. Our hotel’s central location ends your first travel day on an easy, elegant note. Eau Claire Market with 60 shops and restaurants is just steps away. Chinatown is an easy walk into the ambiance of Asia where Peking ducks hang in windows and lanterns light the streets.     Day 2: Travel the Icefields Parkway

    Aboard our motorcoach, we’ll travel along one of the world's most spectacular mountain highways. Unsurpassed scenery paralleling the Great Divide in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, the Columbia Icefields, Bow and Crowfoot Glaciers, Athabasca Falls and Peyto Lake, come into view. See snow-capped mountains reflected in the turquoise waters of Moraine Lake and watch for black bears, moose and caribou along the way.

    Day 3: Cruise Maligne Lake

    We spend two mountain nights at the four-star Sawridge Hotel designed around a three-story fireplace and surrounded by immense forests, pristine lakes, alpine meadows and glaciers. We cruise the glacial waters of Maligne Lake in glass-enclosed boats and learn about the history, geology and wildlife of the lake and Jasper National Park. Some of the world’s most spectacular mountain scenery will slip past your window along with moose and other wildlife. The boat lands at Spirit Island, seen on nearly every postcard rack in Canada. Your own spirit will soar during the short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the mountain-ringed shores. There will be time to explore Jasper’s quaint stores and native crafts before dinner.

    Day 4: Experience the Ice Age

    We’ll spend another three mountain nights at the charming International Hotel nestled at the foot of a mountain in Banff, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the Alpine zone, Banff is Canada’s highest town and our departure point for the Columbia Icefield, the largest icefield south of Alaska. On Icefield Parkway, we pass mesmerizing frozen fields and large upland glaciers, some dating back to the Ice Age. Glacier-fed rivers, majestic peaks and peaceful lakes create scenic wonders and a protected habitat for more than 250 species of birds, bear, elk, wolves, deer and mountain goats. Our “snocoach” will glide over shimmering glacial ice and snow onto the Athabasca Glacier, a tongue of the Columbia Icefield, for an awe-inspiring glimpse of icy crevasses and ice-fed streamlets and a short stroll on ice that froze 400 years ago.

    Day 5: Touch the Sky

    We’ll follow the melting ice to Bow Falls to see how the incredible erosive force of water has sliced through rocks and carved out thundering waterfalls.

    Then, the Banff Gondola provides a comfortable ride up Sulphur Mountain 7,486 feet above sea level, passing over Alpine meadows and bighorn sheep. The summit is the best vantage point in the West, a 360-degree unobstructed view of six mountain ranges. From three observation decks you will see more mountains in a moment than most people see in a lifetime. An elevated boardwalk will lead you along Sulphur Mountain’s summit ridge to the Cosmic Ray Station National Historic Site of Canada and the historic Sanson’s Peak Meteorological Station. After experiencing the wonder of walking above the clouds, you can return to the quaint village of Banff. Join fellow world travelers in exploring charming boutiques and the village’s collection of galleries and cafes.

    Day 6: A Diamond in the Wilderness

    Day 1: Your Nova Scotia travel begins in Halifax

    Day 2: 18th-century Lunenburg and pretty Peggy's Cove

    Your Nova Scotia travel continues with an excursion from Halifax along the rugged Atlantic coast to the fishing village of Lunenburg, renowned for its rich shipbuilding and maritime legacy; established in the 18th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the best surviving examples of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. You have a choice today of sightseeing today – see the village's 18th- and 19th-century timber-built houses on a walking tour, or visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic – housed in historic waterfront buildings – to gain insights into the Maritimes' seafaring heritage.     Day 4: From Nova Scotia travel to Prince Edward Island

    Bid a temporary goodbye to Nova Scotia as you ride a ferry to lovely Prince Edward Island. You'll be mesmerized immediately by many miles of beaches and rich farmland in the interior. After lunch, arrive in the provincial capital of Charlottetown for a two-night stay; visit Founders' Hall, with state-of-the-art exhibits showcasing Canada's history, and settle in at your hotel just steps from Old Charlottetown's boardwalk.

    Day 5: Anne of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island

    Following a morning at leisure in Charlottetown, set out to discover the fragile sand dune habitat on Greenwich Peninsula, and view the wildlife-rich salt marshes and dramatic bluffs along the coast at Prince Edward Island National Park. You'll find yourself immersed in local culture later in the day as you visit the Green Gables House, the old farmhouse immortalized in Lucy Maud Montgomery's cherished 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables, and dig into a traditional lobster dinner, a must-have experience on P.E.I. Tonight, cap a very special day by attending a musical theatre performance of Anne of Green Gables at the Charlottetown Theatre Festival (season permitting).

    Day 6: History comes alive as your Nova Scotia travel continues

    From Prince Edward Island, cross the Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick and on to Nova Scotia once again. Explore colonial life here in the early 17th century as recreated at Port-Royal National Historic Site and the Habitation, a reconstruction of one of North America's earliest European settlements. Continue on to a two-night stay at a golf resort in Digby, built in 1929 overlooking the Annapolis Basin and the Bay of Fundy.

    Day 7: Whale-watching on the Bay of Fundy

    Get a close-up look at nature's wonders during an excursion to Digby Neck, a long peninsula on the Bay of Fundy offering world-renowned whale and bird watching. Back at your resort in Digby, pursue what interests you most in the afternoon, then join us to celebrate a memorable P.E.I. and Nova Scotia travel experience at this evening's farewell dinner.

    Day 8: The Acadian saga ends your P.E.I. and Nova Scotia travel

    As you head back to Halifax for your journey home, wind your way through rich Annapolis Valley farmland to visit Grand-Pré National Historic Site, where the British deported the French Acadians in 1755; the incident inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous poem, Evangeline. Tour ends at Halifax International Airport at 11:45 AM.     . (Mon.) This morning a Montréal sightseeing tour with a Local Guide takes in NOTRE DAME BASILICA, the Old Seminary of St. Sulpice, and a drive to the top of Mount Royal to enjoy a panorama of the city. The evening is free; maybe enjoy dinner in the heart of Old Montréal. (B)

    Day 3: Montréal–Québec City

    . (Tue.) Journey to romantic Québec City, once the center of New France and one of the most historic and best-preserved cities in North America. Upon arrival, enjoy an included guided tour of Canada’s only walled city. Until the British victory of 1759, Old Québec was the center of New France; today it’s a World Heritage Site. Within the walls are the Place d’Armes, the Laval Seminary, and ancient Place Royale. Also, see the Old-World houses crowding the narrow streets in Lower Town by the St. Lawrence River and the historic Plains of Abraham. This evening, consider an optional dinner that includes a visit to 274-foot-high Montmorency Falls and takes you over to Ile d’Orleans, where you’ll enjoy a delightful dinner at Le Moulin de Saint-Laurent, a restored 17th-century flour mill.     Day 5: Québec City–Cap-de-la-Madeleine–Ottawa

    . (Thu.) Drive south this morning to Cap-de-la-Madeleine for a visit to the BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY, a national shrine famous for its fine stained-glass windows. Time to stroll through the grounds of the sanctuary and see the miraculous Madonna in the old chapel. Continue to the nation’s capital of Ottawa, pleasantly framed by the banks of the Ottawa River and the Rideau Canal, where you’ll spend the next two nights. (B,D)

    Day 6: Ottawa

    . (Fri.) Morning sightseeing with a Local Guide includes the Canadian Mint, the residences of the Governor General and Prime Minister, and Parliament Hill. Also, visit the ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE STABLES, a living tribute to Canadian heritage and history. The balance of the day is free. You may wish to take an optional excursion to visit the world-renowned Canadian Museum of Civilization to study exhibits covering the period of early Norse settlement, exploration, and fur-trading days, as well as the achievements of the latest generations. For dinner, maybe visit lively and colorful Byward Market and choose from its array of specialty restaurants. (B)Note: The RCMP Stables are closed on Fridays in October.     Day 7: Ottawa–1000 Islands National Park–Toronto

Afterward, head to Kingston for a brief visit of this historic city. Next, travel along Lake Ontario to Toronto, Canada’s largest and most cosmopolitan city. (B)

    Day 8: Toronto. Niagara Falls Excursion

    . (Sun.) A short drive south along the shores of Lake Ontario to Niagara Falls. For the adventurous, your Tour Director will suggest optional flightseeing over the falls. Then, board the MAID OF THE MIST for a thrilling boat ride to view the thundering falls from river level. Before leaving the area, see the picturesque Floral Clock. Return to Toronto this afternoon to enjoy a sightseeing tour. Highlights include the Legislature Building; the ethnic neighborhoods; the University of Toronto; and Eaton Centre, the city’s number-one tourist attraction with more than 300 stores for world-class shopping. This evening, your Tour Director hosts a special farewell dinner at the top of the 1,815-foot-tall CN TOWER. Wonderful conversation and cuisine make the perfect finale for your vacation.     Day 4: OTTAWA.

Until the British victory of 1759, Old Québec was the center of New France and is one of the best-preserved cities in North America. Within the walls reside the Place d’Armes; the Laval Seminary; the star-plan Citadelle, with grand vistas from its bastions; and ancient Place Royale.     Day 8: MONTRÉAL–VIA Rail OCEAN TRAIN.

    Enjoy a full day at leisure in cosmopolitan Montréal. Later this evening, transfer to the train station and board the overnight Ocean train bound for Nova Scotia. Highlights include the Halifax Explosion, Titanic Graves, Historic Downtown, Dockyards, Halifax Public Gardens, and Halifax Commons.     The discovery of oil converted this all-Western cattle ranching town into a thriving, sophisticated city. See many of the city’s attractions this morning on your sightseeing tour, including downtown, Fort Calgary, Stampede Park, the Saddledome, and Canada Olympic Park. Next, drive west through the foothills of the Rockies and into BANFF NATIONAL PARK. Upon arrival, take the optional gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain for panoramic views of Banff’s spectacular scenery. Then, enjoy a visit to sparkling Bow Falls.

    Day 3: Thu. BANFF.

    Full day at leisure. Banff is one of Canada’s favorite resorts, with summer activities that include hiking, boating, and fishing. Your Tour Director will suggest an optional helicopter ride over the Canadian Rockies.

    Day 4: Day 4, Fri. BANFF–LAKE LOUISE–JASPER NATIONAL PARK.

    First stop is Lake Louise, its cold waters reflecting the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Precipitous gorges, snowcapped mountain ranges, and exquisite lakes come into view as the motorcoach scales two mountain passes. Another highlight on today’s agenda is a stop at the COLUMBIA ICEFIELD to experience the Ice Explorer, an all-terrain vehicle that travels on ice measuring 1,200 feet (365 meters) thick. Late this afternoon, join our optional float trip down the historic Athabasca River. Upon arrival in Jasper, an orientation tour showcasing Jasper’s unspoiled beauty. Your accommodation for the next two nights will be in JASPER NATIONAL PARK.

    Day 5: Day 5, Sat. JASPER

    . Join the optional trip to Maligne Lake and Spirit Island for a narrated cruise. On the return journey, you’ll be mesmerized by the dramatic Maligne Canyon.     Day 6: Sun. JASPER–ROCKY MOUNTAINEER–KAMLOOPS.

    An exciting morning as you board the Rocky Mountaineer for a 2-day, all-daylight, classic rail journey from the Canadian Rockies to the Pacific Coast. En route, pass by Mount Robson, the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, and follow the route of the “Overlanders,” 19th-century homesteaders who attempted to settle this rugged region. Follow the Thompson River and enjoy vistas of the Monashee Mountains. Overnight in Kamloops. Tonight, join our optional dinner outing to a popular theatre performance.
