    Day 1: • Welcome to Budapest

    A transfer is included from Budapest's Ferihegy Airport directly to ms Swiss Emerald, ms Swiss Sapphire or ms Swiss Jewel. Kick off Tauck's two-week Danube, Main, and Rhine River cruise with dinner aboard the riverboat.

    Day 2: • Discover Budapest on the Danube

    Explore Budapest on both sides of the Danube River. Sites include Heroes’ Square, bounded by some of the finest architectural works in Hungary; the Parliament building, a Neo-Gothic masterpiece; and Fishermen’s Bastion. Enjoy some free time in the city, then join us aboard the riverboat for the Captain’s welcome reception and dinner.

    Day 3: • Baroque in Bratislava

    First port of call is Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, where 17 centuries of history are chronicled on a walking tour. Highlights are Baroque palaces from the Habsburg era, St. Martin's Cathedral, the Opera House, Slovak Philharmonic Hall, and a visit to the Old Town Hall. Back on board the riverboat, Slovakian performers entertain you after dinner; continue your Danube, Main and Rhine river cruise to Vienna this evening.

    Day 4: • Music and more in Imperial Vienna

    Get an overview of grand old Vienna, Austria, with a morning sightseeing tour of this historic city, once the center of Europe's Habsburg empire. Then take your choice of a tour of grandiose Schönbrunn Palace, built to rival Versailles, or a visit to the Imperial Silver Room inside the Hofburg – the former Imperial Palace and today the residence of Austria's president. Tonight, you'll receive the royal treatment with a private Imperial Evening at a traditional palace in Vienna featuring a sumptuous dinner and live Viennese music.

    Day 5: • Medieval Austrian abbeys and castles

    Your riverboat continues along the Danube to Dürnstein, whose twisting medieval lanes you'll explore on a walking tour. High above the town lie the ruins of Kuenringerburg, the castle where English King Richard the Lionhearted was held prisoner during the Crusades; an invigorating walk up the hill to the ruins leads to beautiful vistas of the river, town and surrounding countryside. Enjoy more great views of castles and lush vineyards from the top deck or through the panoramic windows of your riverboat while cruising through the wine-growing Wachau Valley. Stop in Melk for a guided tour of its 900-year-old Benedictine Abbey, perched on a rocky outcrop above the river. Inside this Baroque masterpiece are fine frescoes, early manuscripts, and a high altar. Your evening aboard the riverboat includes a wine tasting and a performance by local entertainers.

    After crossing the border from Austria to Germany, dock in the Bavarian town of Passau on the Danube and Inn rivers, whose history dates back to the days of the Roman empire. A walking tour reveals the Baroque treasures of this lovely riverside town, known for its stained glass and its many churches. Your Danube, Main and Rhine river cruise continues to Regensburg.

    Day 7: • Along the Danube to ancient Regensburg

    It's on to the well-preserved medieval town of Regensburg, once a campsite for the Roman legions, today. Our local guide leads you on a delightful walking tour of Old Town including the Steinerne Brücke over the Danube, the oldest stone bridge in Germany; massive Dom St. Peter, the town's 14th-century Gothic cathedral; and Altes Rathaus, the 15th-century town hall that was once the seat of the Imperial Diet.

    Day 8: • Main-Danube Canal & Nürnberg

    Your Danube, Main and Rhine river cruise negotiates the Main-Danube Canal, which ultimately links the North Sea with the Black Sea; learn about the canal's history from a local expert during your transit. The idea goes back as far as Charlemagne, but wasn't realized until the canal's completion in the 1990s; pass through 16 locks as the waterway traverses the mountains. After lunch on the riverboat, arrive in historic Nürnberg; see the city's sites associated with World War II and its aftermath, followed by a walking tour of the walled medieval Old Town.     Day 10: • Treasures of Rothenburg and Würzburg

    Today's travels take you to medieval Rothenburg, on Germany's "Romantic Road," to see its Gothic cathedrals and gabled houses. In charming Würzburg, discover the town's 18th-century Residenz and the ornate Alte Mainbrücke, a bridge over the River Main. And you'll know you're cruising through Bavaria when an oompa band plays for you aboard the riverboat this evening!

    Day 11: • Cruising the Main to Miltenberg

    Meander along the River Main, through through scenic valleys studded with castles, cathedrals, and fortified towns, to the ancient town of Miltenberg; en route, enjoy an on-board glassblowing demonstration by practitioners of this time-honored craft. Enclosed by a wall with gate towers under a steep hill crowned by a castle, Miltenberg boasts many half-timbered houses and a charming Marktplatz.

    Day 12: • From the Main to the Rhine & Rüdesheim

    Leave the Main behind today as your Rhine River cruise continues on to Rüdesheim. A visit to Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett – an eclectic collection of mechanical musical instruments housed in a 15th-century castle in Rüdesheim – precedes tonight's entertaining dinner in a local German restaurant with an old-world ambiance.

    Day 13: • Koblenz or castles & Köln, a.k.a. Cologne

    Arrive in Koblenz, where you can choose a walking tour of its Old Town or a visit to Marksburg Castle; set high above the Rhine, it dates back to the 13th century and offers a taste of medieval life. Your Rhine River cruise continues through the scenic Lorelei Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to Köln (Cologne).     Day 4: Strasbourg - Capital of the Alsace Region

    Day 2: The legacy of many centuries in Prague

    Start today's exploration of Prague in the ancient Hradcany (Castle) district, where you'll see 1,000-year-old Prague Castle's complex of palaces, courtyards and gardens; visit the Cathedral of St. Vitus and enjoy a Tauck Exclusive – a private tour of Strahov Monastery's grand Baroque libraries.     Day 10: Goodbye, riverboat... hello, Budapest

    Your extraordinary Danube River cruise ends this morning in Budapest, Hungary, split into the sections of Buda and Pest by the Danube River. After disembarking your riverboat and bidding the crew farewell, explore the city's Buda side on a walking tour of Castle Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; see Fishermen’s Bastion with its Neo-Romanesque design, and admire the stained glass windows and centuries of history in Matthias Church. After lunch at a local café, spend the rest of the day pursuing what interests you most in Budapest; later, dig into dinner at your choice of select city restaurants.     Day 11: Discover the landmarks of Pest

You’ll enjoy lunch at your hotel,and then during the intermission following Part 1 of The Passion Play, you will enjoy dinner at your hotel before returning to the theater for Part 2 of the play.

    No longer divided but every bit as fascinating, Berlin was once the city of contrasts with the wall separating two different worlds. Now the city has developed into a harmonious blend of new and old, preserving its historical buildings and impressive boulevards as well as creating brand new buildings in the most daring architectural styles. See all of this on the included city sightseeing with a Local Guide. In the afternoon there is an optional excursion to historic Potsdam to visit Sanssouci Park, a marvel of landscape gardening and architectural wonders, and Cecilienhof Castle. (B)

    Welcome to Germany and the city of Frankfurt. Late this afternoon, we enjoy an orientation tour of the city's financial centre and medieval Römerplatz. Later we enjoy a Welcome Drink with our Tour Director and fellow travellers.

    A morning drive brings us to St. Goar where we embark on a relaxing Rhine Cruise. We disembark in Boppard and rejoin our coach as we drive past Bonn, Beethoven's birthplace. Here we will visit the open-air museum, which includes watching a film on this unique village as well as experiencing its towers and fortifications. From here we continue our journey to Bayreuth where we see the Wagner Festival Theatre. Next it's only a short drive to Nuremberg, once one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. On our arrival, an orientation tour will show us the mighty ramparts, bustling market place and St. Sebald's Cathedral as part of our walking tour of the city. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 9

    Today after breakfast we drive to the chocolate-box town of Rothenburg. Here a walking tour with our Tour Director reveals half-timbered houses, the old town hall and a special Hidden Treasure. Then time to shop for wooden Christmas ornaments before we drive along the Romantic Road to the lively Bavarian capital, Munich, for the night. This evening, why not visit the Hofbräuhaus, the world's most famous beer hall? (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 10

    After breakfast, we enjoy an orientation tour which highlights the Olympic Stadium, Ludwigstrasse and Marienplatz with its famous Glockenspiel Carillon. Later, there's time at leisure. You may wish to visit some of the city's fine museums or take an optional excursion to the Nymphenburg
    Palace. This evening, we will enjoy a Highlight Dinner in a specially selected restaurant. (Buffet breakfast / Highlight dinner)

    Day 11

    This morning, we drive to Dachau village where we visit the sinister concentration camp for sobering reminders of the horrors of World War II. From here our ascent into the Bavarian Alps brings us to the famous Passion Play village of Oberammergau. Next we will continue on to view Neuschwanstein, mad King Ludwig's fairytale castle. Then the scenery of our drive along the Bavarian pre-alpine range is enough to take your breath away! Finally, we arrive in the hills of the Black Forest to stop at Lake Titisee, famous for its cuckoo clocks. Tonight, we dine at our picturesque hotel in the heart of this beautiful region. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 12

    Today's scenic drive brings us to the elegant city of Baden-Baden, famous for its spa and casino. Then on to the 'Student Prince' city of Heidelberg with its dominant castle for a walking tour through the castle courtyards. From here, it's only a short trip on the ‘autobahn’ as we journey back to Frankfurt for the final night of our German extravaganza. Tonight we enjoy a Farewell Dinner together with our Tour Director. (Buffet breakfast / Farewell dinner)

    Day 13

    This morning there is time to bid farewell to our Tour Director and traveling companions as our vacation comes to an end. Airport transfers are available, conditions apply. (Buffet breakfast)

    Overnight flight to Frankfurt.

    Day 2

    Welcome to Germany! Late this afternoon, we enjoy an orientation tour of Frankfurt including medieval Römerplatz. Later we enjoy a Welcome Drink with our Tour Director.

    Day 3

    This morning we take a relaxing Rhine Cruise from St. Goar to Boppard, as we rejoin our coach we drive past Bonn, Beethoven’s birthplace. Then we continue to Cologne to see its gothic cathedral, before reaching our hotel. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 4

    Today we drive into Lower Saxony en route to Hamburg, with the chance to take a harbour cruise. Later, an orientation tour includes the inner Alster Lake. We dine in our hotel tonight. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 5

    This morning we follow the Elbe valley and cross the former ‘Iron Curtain’ to the historic city of Berlin. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 6

    Our sightseeing tour features highlights of both East and West including the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden Boulevard, the German State Opera House and the Reichstag Building. Later, time at leisure. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 7

    Today we drive to Dresden – known as ‘Florence on the Elbe’. On arrival our orientation includes the Opera House and Zwinger Palace. Later, why not take an optional tour to The Treasury and Schloss Moritzburg? (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 8

    First to Modlareuth to visit the open-air museum. From here we continue to Bayreuth to see the Wagner Festival Theater, and on to Nuremberg with orientation on arrival, which will show us the mighty ramparts, bustling market place and St. Sebald’s Cathedral. Tonight we enjoy a Highlight Dinner in a local restaurant. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    After our orientation of Munich we continue to the beautiful region of Oberammergau, where we enjoy dinner in our hotel. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 10

    After breakfast, there is time at leisure followed by lunch at a local restaurant. The Passion Play begins at 2.30pm and runs until 5pm when there is a dinner break. The play resumes at 8pm and finishes at 10.30pm when you are transferred back to your hotel accommodation. (Buffet breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

    Day 11

    After breakfast we rejoin our Trafalgar coach and fellow travelers and continue with the regular tour itinerary. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)
