    In the hilltop town of San Gimignano, see 13 medieval towers that were built in the 12th century by the nobility as both private fortresses and symbols of wealth. Stroll along the narrow streets and visit Piazza della Cisterna, one of Italy's most picturesque town squares. Continue your travels through lush Tuscan landscapes to the seaside resort town of Viareggio, where you'll dine à la carte this evening.

    Day 9: Cinque Terre storybook villages

    Visit Cinque Terre, accessible only by sea for hundreds of years. Journey by train through the mountains to one of the villages for a look at daily life in this remote part of Italy. You'll have time to yourself to wander through the town's cobblestone streets, where you'll experience daily life – from colorful fishing boats home from the sea to the wine, olives and citrus fruit produced locally.     Day 11: Masterpieces of the Uffizi

    Days 1-2: Fly to Florence

    A Go Ahead representative welcomes you at the airport and escorts you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for strolling the cobbled streets and bridges of Florence. This evening, become acquainted with your fellow travelers as well as the region’s famed cuisine at this evening’s Welcome Dinner. (B in flight, D)

    Accommodations: Hotel Palazzo Ricasoli, 3 stars. In the historical center of Florence, the Hotel Palazzo Ricasoli sits in a prestigious building, dating back to the 16th century and facing the historical Via San Gallo. The hotel is close to major museums, galleries, Piazza San Marco, the church of San Lorenzo, Duomo and the Exhibition Trade Fair center.     Day 3: Florence

    Discover the timeless city of Florence, birthplace of opera and the Italian language. Today’s guided tour introduces you to the city’s Renaissance splendor.     Day 4: Florence or Lucca & Colle Verde

Or opt to join a pastoral excursion to the walled city of Lucca and Colle Verde, a rural farm where olive oil is pressed. Tonight, join an optional dinner at a historic trattoria-style restaurant in the heart of Florence’s old town. (B)

    Excursion to Lucca & Colle Verde: $99. This pastoral excursion begins with a visit to Lucca. You’ll have free time to browse in this inviting town before continuing on through the rolling green hills above Lucca to Colle Verde, a rural retreat and farm where some of Italy’s best-quality olive oil is pressed. During your half-day excursion, learn about the process by which olive oil is extracted and refined. Then enjoy a light lunch and an olive oil tasting session.

    Florentine Dinner: $115. Enjoy a traditional Tuscan meal at a bustling trattoria in the heart of Florence, the capital of Tuscany.     Day 5: Siena

    En route to Siena, stop in San Gimignano, “the city of beautiful towers.” Take in views of glorious scenery before continuing to a local wine tasting, where you’ll have the opportunity to sample some of the region’s finest wines.     Accommodations: Garden Hotel, 4 stars. The Hotel Garden is a prestigious 19th century residence with original frescoed halls, surrounded by a secular live oaks park. The property is situated 700 meters from the ancient walls of Siena and has been recently renovated with ancient furnishings.     Day 6: Explore Siena

    Follow a local expert guide on a morning tour of Siena, longtime rival of nearby Florence. Visit Siena’s Romanesque Duomo, which houses major works of art by Donatello and Nicola Pisano. Walk along medieval streets to the Piazza del Campo. Each summer, daredevils race horses bareback around this main piazza during the famed Palio.     Excursion: $65. Enjoy a guided tour of Assisi, a hilltop town with stunning views and the famous Church of St. Francis. Among the city’s many legends, one endearing tale claims that the Basilica of San Francesco was built in record time because of the immense affection that the people had for St. Francis. The church has had a large following of pilgrims for the past 600 years and today, it is still one of the world’s most frequented Christian shrines.     Day 9: Travel to Rome

    Day 1: Ciao bella Roma

    Day 2: Rome and Tauck's exclusive after-hours visit to the Vatican Museums

    Take a walking tour of Rome, accompanied by a local guide, then spend some free time as you please before a special visit to the Vatican. Tauck has arranged for an after-hours guided visit to the Vatican Museums, including the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, and the Tapestries, as well as the Sistine Chapel (day of the tour may vary). This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the treasures of the Vatican without the crowds – where discoveries include the fact that the floor of the Sistine Chapel is almost as amazing as the ceiling!     Day 6: Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain: A Vibrant Port with a Historic Past

Stand in awe of the grand gothic cathedral, the Palace of L'Almudaina, a former residence of the Majorcan monarchs, now a museum, and the Museum of Modern Art with famous works by Cézanne, Gauguin, and Picasso. Visit the fish market and Plaza Mayor. Behind the 18th-century walls that kept pirates at bay, the historic quarter is concealed. Old churches, palaces and stately mansions speak of its prosperous past.

The Roman ruins of Carthage are nearby as is the Bardo Museum, offering a collection of Roman mosaics and other antiquities. But what you won't want to miss is the lively souk or marketplace where you can buy handicrafts of gold, bronze and olive wood as well as watch the artisans weave brightly-colored fabric with hand looms.

    Day 1

    Overnight flight to Rome.

    Day 2

    Welcome to Rome, the capital of Italy, and the Eternal City! After check-in at the hotel, there's time to relax or perhaps take a stroll through this historic city. This evening we will enjoy a Welcome Drink with our Tour Director and fellow traveling companions.

    Day 3

    Our first highlight today is a guided visit of the Sistine Chapel, enhanced by the use of our audio system used by our local guide, where we can gaze in awe at Michelangelo's beautiful painted ceiling. Next we visit St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, and then cross the Tiber to ancient Rome where we will
    overlook the Forum and visit the Colosseum, infamous for gladiatorial combat, and also see the Circus Maximus where chariot races were held. After, enjoy time on your own and later maybe try out some Roman cuisine in a typical trattoria and watch Rome go by! (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 4

    Our Tour Director will take the time to show us a true Hidden Treasure
    during our journey today! We start by driving through the regions of Latium, Umbria and into Tuscany to Renaissance Florence. On our arrival we enjoy the view from Piazzale Michelangelo before our guided walking tour reveals to us the medieval and Renaissance past of this culturally rich city. We will see the Piazza Signoria, the political centre of the 15th century city, with its impressive sculptures and imposing palazzos, the multi-coloured marble Duomo and the famous Baptistery with the bronze doors designed by the Renaissance artist Ghiberti. We will also visit the Basilica of the Holy Cross where so many of the great men of Italy are buried, including Michaelangelo. Then time at leisure to explore further or to shop for high quality leather and 18-carat gold jewellery.  Tonight we enjoy an authentic Tuscan dinner of local produce in a restaurant with stunning views over the vineyards of the Chianti Hills. (Buffet breakfast / 'Be My Guest' Dinner)

    Day 5

    This morning after breakfast our first stop will be at Pisa with its famous Leaning Tower and cathedral in the Square of Miracles. Here there's time for photos before we continue our drive past the quarries of Carrara and the resorts of Portofino, Rapallo and Genoa, Columbus' birthplace. Then on to Turin where our orientation shows us the Antonelliana building and the Piazza san Carlo. Tonight why not sample a dinner of local specialities in a local restaurant? (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 6

    First we travel to Lake Maggiore, which is the most westerly of the three large prealpine lakes of Italy. From here we enjoy a scenic drive along the lake and then head south for the capital of Lombardy, Milan. Here our guided tour includes the Galleria, the Piazza del Duomo where we admire the Gothic cathedral, bristling with innumerable sculptures, and the renowned opera house, La Scala. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 7

    This morning our first stop is a visit to the Cistercian Abbey of Pavia, an important architectural monument in Italy. Later we continue our journey into the Veneto stopping to see Juliet's balcony in Shakespeare's Verona. We also see the 2,000 year old Roman arena, still in use today, before continuing to magical Venice for two nights. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 8

    After breakfast our morning cruise by private motor launch takes us to St. Mark's Square highlighting the Doge’s Palace and Basilica en route to one of the oldest Murano glass-blowing workshops. We'll witness a demonstration of this ancient art before time at leisure. You may wish to relax in a café or take an optional excursion to one of the islands in the Lagoon! Later after dinner at the hotel, why not experience this city from an elegant gondola? (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 9

    First we visit Mantua, the setting for Verdi’s opera, Rigoletto, with its arcaded streets and cathedral. Later we arrive in Bologna, famous for its university, architecture, fine sausages and hams. Bologna is a feast for the senses and the stomach! Here a sightseeing tour with a local guide shows us Neptune's fountain, the Kissing Towers and Piazza Maggiore. Later, perhaps enjoy some of the city's fine cuisine at a local trattoria! (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 10

    This morning we travel over the Apennine Mountains stopping at Assisi for a walking tour, using our audio system, of the peaceful hometown of St. Francis. It was here that he founded his Order of Grey Friars or Franciscans in 1208 and he died here in 1226 and was canonized just two years later. We will visit the magnificent basilica and see the tomb of St. Francis and later also see the Church of St. Mary of the Angels which stands on the site of where he died. From here it's a short drive back to the 'Eternal City' Rome via the impressive hill-top town of Orte. Tonight, we enjoy a Farewell Dinner with wine together with our Tour Director and traveling companions. (Buffet breakfast / Farewell Dinner)

    This morning it's 'buon viaggio' to our Tour Director as our Italian vacation comes to an end. There are airport transfers available, conditions apply. (Buffet breakfast)

    (Mon.) Board your overnight transatlantic flight.

    Day 2: Arrive in Rome, Italy.

    (Tue.) Transfer to your hotel. Balance of the day is at leisure. At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director, then enjoy this evening’s welcome dinner with wine at a local restaurant. (D)

    Day 3: Rome.

    (Wed.) Attend the weekly general audience of the Pope (subject to availability). This afternoon, visit ST. PAUL OUTSIDE THE WALLS and the CATACOMBS. During the persecutions, the catacombs were used as places of refuge for the celebration of the Eucharist. Next, visit ST. JOHN LATERAN BASILICA, the HOLY STAIRS, which were brought from Jerusalem to Rome around 326 AD by St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, and consist of 28 white marble steps. As a favorite of pilgrims every where, these steps may only be ascended on the knees. Then, visit the impressive ST. MARY MAJOR BASILICA. (B)

    Day 4: Rome.

    (Thu.) This morning, enjoy a guided visit of the VATICAN MUSEUMS and the SISTINE CHAPEL, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling paintings and The Last Judgment. Continue to monumental ST. PETER’S SQUARE and BASILICA. Cross the Tiber River and visit the COLOSSEUM, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World®, and the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman legions marched in triumph. (B)

    Day 5: Rome–Montecassino–San Giovanni Rotondo.

    (Fri.) Visit the ABBEY OF MONTECASSINO, the first of the Benedictine monasteries founded by St. Benedict around 529 AD, and its MUSEUM. Then, journey to Italy’s eastern coast and San Giovanni Rotondo, home to the beloved St. Padre Pio. (B,D)

    Day 6: San Giovanni Rotondo. Excursion to Monte Sant’Angelo.

    (Sat.) Visit the FRIARY OF PADRE PIO, including his tomb, cell, confessional, and the OLD CHURCH where he received the stigmata. Also visit the NEW CHURCH. Afterwards, visit the nearby SHRINE OF MONTE SANT’ANGELO, one of Christendom’s most celebrated shrines and where St. Michael the Archangel appeared in years 490 AD, 492 AD, and 1656. (B,D)

    Day 7: San Giovanni Rotondo–Lanciano–Loreto–Assisi.

    (Sun.) Visit Lanciano and the CHURCH that is home to an 8th-century Eucharistic Miracle. Afterwards, visit the HOLY HOUSE OF LORETO, where, according to tradition, angels transported the home of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Arrive at the hilltop village of Assisi, home of St. Francis and St. Clare. (B,D)

    Day 8: Assisi–Siena–Florence.

    (Mon.) Celebrate Mass this morning followed by a guided walking tour of Assisi. Visit the BASILICAS OF ST. FRANCIS and ST. CLARE. See the crucifix that spoke to St. Francis. Also visit the ST. MARY OF THE ANGELS BASILICA and the PORTIUNCULA. On the way to Florence, stop in Siena and visit the SANCTUARY OF ST. CATHERINE and the BASILICA OF ST. DOMINIC. (B,D)

    Day 9: Florence.

    (Mon.) First stop this morning is in Siena. Walk through ancient, narrow lanes to PIAZZA DEL CAMPO, site of the biannual Palio, Siena’s spectacular medieval-style horse race. Then, continue through unforgettable landscapes of gently rolling, vine-clad hills to hilltop San Gimignano, and walk through the most picturesque of Italy’s perfectly preserved medieval towns.     Day 6: Florence.
