    Arrive in (Sat.) Time to rest or to start exploring the Spanish capital. At 6 pm, meet your Tour Director and traveling companions, and have a welcome dinner at your hotel. (D)

    Day 3: Madrid.

    (Sun.) The capital since 1561, Madrid today is a strikingly modern city, the showcase of a country resolutely turned towards the future. Your Local Guide takes you to the Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España with its monument to Cervantes, the Parliament, Cibeles Fountain, elegant Calle Alcala, and Paseo de Castellana. Then, the highlight: a visit to the palatial PRADO MUSEUM with its priceless art treasures. Afternoon at leisure. An optional excursion to El Escorial and the Valley of the Fallen can be arranged.     Day 4: Madrid–Toledo–Granada.

    (Mon.) This morning, focus on splendid Toledo. Spectacularly situated on a granite hill surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River, the ancient Castilian capital attracts more sightseers from all over the world than any other Spanish town. A Local Guide takes you to the Moorish bridge, an early SYNAGOGUE, the 13th-century gothic CATHEDRAL, and the Church of SANTO TOMÉ with one of El Greco’s most famous paintings. Also time to visit a DAMASCENE STEEL WORKSHOP before arriving in history-steeped Granada. (B,D)

    Day 5: Granada–Costa del Sol.

    (Tue.) See the sights of Granada with a Local Guide and visit its main attraction, the ALHAMBRA COMPLEX. The mighty yet graceful citadel was planned by 13th-century Moorish ruler Al Ahamar. A fantasy of “lace in stone” surrounded by arabesque gardens and fountains, it affords superb views of the Old Quarter and Sacromonte, a mountain occupied by Gypsy cave dwellers. Also amble through the magnificent WATER GARDENS OF THE GENERALIFE, the royal summer residence. Then, turn towards the sea, away from the mountains, to lively Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol. (B)

    Day 6: Costa del Sol.

    At Leisure on the (Wed.) Enjoy a free day at your beachfront hotel. Catch up on your postcards, enjoy the sandy beaches, browse through the trendy boutiques, and sample the many fancy restaurants. You may want to join an optional excursion to the Rock of Gibraltar, in British hands since 1704. (B)

    Day 7: Costa del Sol–Ronda–Jerez–Seville.

    (Thu.) Visit picturesque, historic Ronda, perched on a platform of the Sierra de Ronda and cut in two by a deep ravine, before reaching Jerez, famous for its sherry wines and magnificent horses of mixed Spanish, Arab, and English blood. Highlight today is a visit to a SHERRY BODEGA. Then, on to Seville, the vibrant capital of Andalusia. (B,D)

    Day 8: Seville.

    (Fri.) During your sightseeing tour with a Local Guide hear about the city’s role in Roman times, its conquest by the Moors in 712 AD, and its contribution to the discovery of the New World. Admire Maria Luisa Park, the Golden Tower on the Guadalquivir River, and the university that used to be the tobacco factory of Carmen fame. Then, stroll through the narrow lanes of the charming SANTA CRUZ QUARTER, and visit the CATHEDRAL with Columbus’ tomb, the world’s largest gothic edifice. The rest of the day is at leisure. For a truly Andalusian night out, reserve a seat at our optional flamenco show. (B)

    (Sat.) In the morning, enjoy a walking tour with a Local Guide in Cordoba. See the Alcazar, the Roman Bridge, and the medieval old Jewish quarter.     Day 1

    Overnight flight to Madrid.

    Day 2

    Welcome to Madrid, the Spanish capital city! Time to relax or explore this lively Spanish capital. Later enjoy a Welcome Drink with your Tour Director and fellow travelers. 

    Hotel: Rafael Atocha (2 nights)

    Day 3

    This morning our guided sightseeing tour introduces us to Madrid which King Philip II made the capital of the empire in 1561. We drive along the leafy avenues to see the statue of Cervantes’ fictional hero, Don Quixote, in the Plaza de España. Then we continue past the Cibeles Fountain and the Parliament, and cross the Puerta del Sol. Finally we see the Royal Palace, the largest royal palace in Western Europe with more than 2,800 rooms, which is the official residence of King Juan Carlos and the Royal Family, and is now used only for state occasions. The Royal Family choose to live in the smaller Palacio de la Zarzuela on the outskirts of the city. Then we have time at leisure to relax or perhaps take an excursion to see the Valley of the Fallen which commemorates all those who died on both sides during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), and general Franco is buried inside the impressive basilica. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 4

    We travel south to Toledo, former capital of Spain but now the capital of the province of Castile. On our arrival a guided walking tour highlights the Jewish Synagogue, which is one of the oldest in Europe, and the church of Santo Tome which houses one of the masterpieces of El Greco. Then we travel through the wine producing centre of Valdepeñas, before crossing through La Mancha where Don Quixote tilted at windmills as his faithful servant, Sancho Panza, looked on. Later we arrive in hilltop Granada with wonderful views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This evening we have dinner included in our hotel. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 5

    Our morning guided sightseeing tour visits the Alhambra Palace, Spain’s most magnificent example of Moorish architecture and the former residence of the Moorish monarchs of Granada. The name means ‘the red fortress’ and the palace and fortress complex occupies a hilly terrace on the southeastern border of the city. We also see the exotic water gardens of Generalife, the royal summer residence, where you can enjoy fine views over the town and the hills beyond. Then we depart for the coast and the Costa del Sol, on of the most popular resort areas of Europe, where tonight you may wish to sample the nightlife of this lively area. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 6

    Today we drive along the Costa del Sol to La Linea where we cross to the Rock of Gibraltar, the British overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula and overlooking the Straits of Gibraltar. The territory of Gibraltar was ceded by Spain to Great Britain in perpetuity in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. There is time to do some duty-free shopping before we travel through the sherry wine region of Jerez to Seville where we spend the next two nights. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner) 

    Hotel: Zenit (2 nights)

    Day 7

    Seville is the artistic, cultural and financial capital of southern Spain and the capital of Andalusia. The city is situated on the River Guadalquivir and our morning sightseeing with the local guide is dominated by the Bell Tower and weather vane of Giralda. We will also see the pools and fountains of Maria Luisa Park, Christopher Columbus’ tomb, and enjoy a walking tour of the Jewish quarter. Tonight we enjoy an authentic tapas dinner in a typical bodega restaurant and learn about the local sherry, manzanillo. (Buffet breakfast / 'Be My Guest' Dinner)

    Hotel: NH Parque De Lisboa (2 nights)

    Day 8

    Our journey today takes us via the ‘Jabugo’ (ham centre) of Spain and past mighty castles. Later we enter the Alentejo region of Portugal which is commonly known as the bread basket of Portugal, a region of vast open countryside with undulating plains and rich fertile soil. All the major towns are mainly reliant on agriculture and there are several types of cheeses, wines and smoked hams and sausages which are produced in this region, as well as the cultivation of cork forests. Later we reach the capital, Lisbon, where we stay for the next two nights. You may wish to dine out on local specialities and listen to the haunting sound of Fado music tonight? (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 9

    Our guided tour shows us the Monument to the Discoveries which was inaugurated in 1960 during the celebrations of the 500-year anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It commemorates the maritime expansion of Portugal as well as many heroes of Portuguese history including Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil. Then we see the beautiful suspension bridge across the Tagus, one of the longest in Europe being 12 miles in length and spanning the estuary, and finally the Belem Tower which was built in the early 16th century to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. This defensive yet elegant construction has become one of the symbols of the city and in 1983 it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then time at leisure perhaps to shop for pottery, cork and fisherman’s sweaters in the nearby fishing villages of Cascais and Sintra. Tonight we enjoy a Farewell Dinner with our Tour Director and fellow travelers. (Buffet breakfast / Farewell Dinner)

    Day 10

    This morning after breakfast it is time to bid farewell to our Tour Director as our tour comes to an end or you can join the Highlights of France and Spain, see below. Airport transfers are available, conditions apply. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 11

    Transfers on Day 2 at Madrid Airport will operate at 09.30,12.30, 15.00 and 17.30. Passengers arriving later should make their own way to the first hotel. Return transfers on the last touring day will arrive at Lisbon Airport at 07.00 and 09.30. For passengers who wish to be transferred to Madrid, we will transfer you to the Trafalgar extra night hotel in Madrid with arrival around 6pm.

Next, enjoy a walk through the walled town of Avila where St. Theresa founded the Order of Carmelites. Overnight in Salamanca, whose baroque Plaza Mayor is one of the country’s grandest squares.     Day 5: Salamanca–Fatima–Lisbon, Portugal.

    (Tue.) The majestic scenery of the Serra da Estrela mountain range forms the backdrop of your morning drive into Portugal. Before heading for Lisbon, melt into the stream of pilgrims from all over the world as you visit the SANCTUARY OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY in Fatima. (B)

    Day 6: Lisbon.

    (Wed.) Lisbon was the center of Europe’s longest-lived overseas empire. Portugal’s imperial ambitions date back to Prince Henry the Navigator’s 15th-century discoveries in West Africa. Morning sightseeing with a Local Guide features a drive through the Baxia quarter’s main squares. Then, enjoy a walk through the cobbled alleys of quaint ALFAMA, the quarter of the seamen. Drive past the Bull Ring to Pombal Statue and along the grand Avenida da Liberdade. Stop for pictures of Belem Tower, guarding the mouth of the Tagus, and visit JERONIMOS MONASTERY with the tomb of Vasco da Gama. Afternoon and evening at leisure. This evening, why not sign up for an optional dinner with Fado-style entertainment? (B)

    Day 7: Lisbon–Seville, Spain.

Sightseeing with a Local Guide includes a panoramic drive to CAP SPARTEL. (B,D)

    Day 10: Tangier–Costa del Sol, Spain.

    (Sun.) Visit Tangier’s colorful GRAND SOCCO square and explore the narrow streets of the Casbah. Return across the Straits with cameras at the ready as you approach the Bay of Algeciras. The vistas of the Rock of Gibraltar are spectacular! Then, drive to your hotel in Torremolinos at the elegant Costa del Sol. (B)

    Sat. Journey west to fortified Avila, then on to Salamanca, just six miles from the spot where Wellington routed Napoleon’s army in 1812. Make sure you spend some time wandering around Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor, the most beautiful square in Spain. Leave Salamanca and head westwards to the fortress town of Ciudad Rodrigo, perched high above the Rio Agueda. A profusion of woodlands and mountains awaits you as you journey into the valley of the Sierra da Estrela on your way for an overnight in Coimbra. (B,D)

    Day 4: COIMBRA–FATIMA–OBIDOS–LISBON.

    Sun. This morning, enjoy an orientation tour of Coimbra, strategically situated on a hill overlooking the Mondego River. Next, Fatima. Stop here to see the sanctuary, made famous by the Virgin’s apparition to three shepherd children, Francisco, Jacinth, and Lucia, on May 13, 1917. A few more miles for a stop in Obidos, a fortified city still flanked by towers and bastions overlooking the countryside dotted with windmills. Overnight in Lisbon. (B)

    Day 5: LISBON.

    Mon. Henry the Navigator made Lisbon the 15th-century mistress of the seas.     Tue. Drive southeast this morning into the Alentejo through the countryside famous for its production of cork. Then, on to the border at Vila Verde and cross into Spain for the journey into Andalusia, enjoying quite different scenery as you skirt the Sierra de Aracena before reaching delightful Seville for two overnights.     Day 7: SEVILLE.

    Wed. One of Spain’s most colorful cities. Perhaps you’d like to spend the morning enjoying an optional sightseeing tour including the main highlights of this vibrant city. (B)

    Day 8: SEVILLE–CORDOBA–MADRID.

    Thu. Drive north towards Carmona, an Old World country town dominated by an ancient Alcazar, to Cordoba. This is Spain’s most Moorish city with its great mosque, which is rightly known as one of Islam’s greatest pieces of architecture outside the Arab world and now a Catholic cathedral since 1236. Later, into the very heart of La Mancha, famed for its castles and windmills. Overnight in Madrid. (B)

    Day 9: MADRID.

    Fri. Not only is it the capital of Spain, but because it is situated 2,180 feet above sea level, the Spaniards rightly say Madrid is the nearest thing to heaven. Enjoy the main highlights on the included guided sightseeing excursion. The optional trip to Toledo is rewarding in more ways than one; the splendid setting of this old walled city above the Tagus was made famous in El Greco’s painting, and even now it’s like a great open-air museum of Spanish history and art.     Welcome to the Spanish capital, Madrid! After check-in, you may wish to relax at your hotel or why not take an excursion to El Escorial? This evening we will enjoy a Welcome Drink with our Tour Director and meet our traveling companions.

    Day 3

    First we enjoy an included excursion to Toledo, capital of Castile. Here sightseeing with a local guide includes a visit to the synagogue, the Church of Santo Tome and a steel workshop. Then we return to Madrid where our guided tour shows us the Plaza España, the Puerta del Sol, the Cibeles Fountain and Gran Via.This evening, perhaps dine in a restaurant on the Plaza Mayor. (Buffet Breakfast)

    Day 4

    This morning our journey takes us over the Guadarrama Mountains to El Cid's city of Burgos, to see the gothic cathedral. From here we drive close to the Ebro and over the Cantabrian Cordillera to the coast and sophisticated Santander for the night. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 5

    Today's first stop is in Bilbao where there's a chance to visit the new Guggenheim Museum. We pass by Guetaria, birthplace of Juan Sebastian Elcano who accomplished the first circumnavigation of the world as a member of the great Magelan expedition, 1519-1522. Then we head to seaside San Sebastian. On our arrival an orientation tour shows us the Bahia de la Concha beach, then on to Pamplona. Here we see the ancient streets and learn of the Festival of St. Firminius, when the bulls are left to run free through the town!

    Day 6

    Today we return to the Ebro Valley, stopping at Zaragoza where we see the Cathedral of El Pilar as well as the Cathedral La Seo. Then onto Barcelona where our Tour Director shows us a Hidden Treasure in this fascinating and vibrant city. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 7

    Our morning sightseeing tour with a local guide and audio system includes a walk through the Gothic Quarter with its impressive cathedral. We also see Gaudi's Sagrada Familia plus many of his other eccentric architectural masterpieces. Later, we'll view Columbus Monument and the Ramblas. Then enjoy time at leisure in this sophisticated city or perhaps an optional excursion to mystical Montserrat to see the shrine to the Black Madonna, Our lady of Montserrat, or ‘La Morenta’, as she is affectionately known all over Catalonia? (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 8

    We drive past orange and almond orchards to Peñiscola with its ancient castle. Then through the ‘huertas’ to sunny Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, where our orientation includes the town hall, the Bull Ring, the Towers of Serrano and Cuarte and the cathedral. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 9

    This morning we travel inland to the ‘sierras’ and Guadix, stopping to view the troglodyte cave dwellings. Cave houses are common throughout the province of Granada, but the highest concentration is in Barrio Santiago. Some of the cave dwellings look like small cottages, others look like walled earthed mounds with chimneys sticking out! From here we continue our journey via the jagged Mora Pass, as we make our way to the Moorish city of Granada. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 10

    This morning after breakfast our sightseeing tour with a local guide and audio system visits the spectacular Moorish Alhambra Palace. Our guided tour highlights the extraordinary architecture and shows us the exotic water gardens of the Generalife, the royal summer residence, where we have fine views over the town and the surrounding hills. Afterwards we will continue to the coast, and our hotel for two nights, in the Costa del Sol with its long beaches, stopping in the resort of Torremolinos. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 11

    After breakfast you can enjoy a full day at leisure perhaps to relax! Or you may wish to shop for souvenirs in the old town of Torremolinos, lie on the beach and soak up the sunshine or maybe take an optional excursion to the white-washed village of Mijas. Your evening is at leisure. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 12

    We enjoy a scenic drive past the exciting millionaire's resort of Marbella and on to La Linea. Later, we cross to the Rock of Gibraltar, with plenty of time for duty-free shopping before continuing through the Jerez countryside. Finally, we arrive in the Andalusian capital of Seville for two nights. Tonight we enjoy an authentic tapas dinner in a typical bodega restaurant and learn about the local sherry, manzanillo, and have the chance to taste it too! (Buffet breakfast / 'Be My Guest' Dinner)

    Day 13

    Our guided tour includ the Bell Tower and weather vane of the slender Giralda Tower. We'll also see the pools and fountains of the Maria Luisa Park and Christopher Columbus' tomb and continue with a walk through the Jewish quarter. Tonight, why not experience a little Spanish passion at a fiery Flamenco show after dinner in our hotel? (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 14

    Today we travel along the Guadalquivir Valley to the perfectly preserved city of Cordoba. Our sightseeing features the magnificent Mezquita, a former 8th century Moorish mosque, now hosting Cordoba's main cathedral, and we also have time to visit to the medieval synagogue. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 15

    Today we cross La Mancha to Puerto Lapice where, according to tradition, Don Quixote was dubbed knight by the local innkeeper. Next we drive back to Madrid where a local guide takes us on a visit to the world-famous Prado Museum to admire the paintings of Velazquez and Goya among the many fine works displayed (audio system included). Then there is time perhaps to enjoy some last-minute shopping. This evening, join your Tour Director and travelling companions for a Farewell Dinner to celebrate the Spanish tour we have enjoyed together. (Buffet breakfast / Farewell Dinner)

    Day 16

    This morning it is time for final goodbyes to Spain and our Tour Director as our vacation comes to an end. There are airport transfers available, conditions apply. (Buffet breakfast)

    This morning we make our way to the ancient capital of Castile, Toledo.
    On arrival our walking tour with a local guide and audio system includes visits to the ancient synagogue, the Church of Santo Tomé, a steel workshop and views of the cathedral. We continue to Roman-founded Cordoba for dinner and our overnight stay. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 4

    Highlights of our morning sightseeing tour using our audio system include the Mosque of the Caliphs and medieval synagogue. Then we drive past the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the grandeur of hilltop Granada, Spain's most beautiful Moorish-influenced city. This evening, we will enjoy an included Highlight Dinner of local specialities whilst being serenaded. (Buffet breakfast / Highlight Dinner)

    Morning sightseeing features a visit to the exquisite Alhambra Palace, former residence of Moorish Kings, using our audio system. From here we will continue towards Torremolinos, the most popular Mediterranean resort on the Costa del Sol for two relaxing nights. This afternoon, perhaps take an optional excursion to the pretty hilltop village of Mijas, and later why not enjoy a delicious fish dinner in the oldest part of town? (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 7

    Today our Tour Director will show us a Hidden Treasure! But first we drive to La Linea to cross to the Rock of Gibraltar with time for duty free shopping. Next, our journey takes us through the sherry wine region of Jerez to Seville where we spend the next two nights. Tonight, why not enjoy a fiery Flamenco show after our tapas dinner with sherry in a typical bodega restaurant. (Buffet breakfast / 'Be My Guest' Dinner)

    Day 8

    Today's morning sightseeing tour with our local guide and audio system is dominated by the Bell Tower and weather vane of Giralda. Afterwards enjoy some time on your own in this city steeped in Moorish history and culture. (Buffet breakfast)

    Our journey today takes us via the 'Jabugo' (ham centre) of Spain and past mighty castles. Later, we enter the Alentejo region of Portugal with its many cork forests.     Day 10

    After breakfast, we will see the Monument to the Discoveries, the beautiful suspension bridge across the Tagus and admire views of the Belem Tower on our guided morning sightseeing tour including our audio system. A highlight of our tour will be a leisurely walk around the quaint Alfama district. Later time at leisure perhaps to shop for pottery, cork and fisherman's sweaters in the nearby fishing villages of Cascais and Sintra. Tonight why not enjoy a typical meal in the old quarter watching Portuguese folk dancing and listening to heart-wrenching and melancholic Fado melodies? (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 11

    We continue on a scenic drive through the magnificent Serra d'Aire Mountains to visit the Shrine at Fatima, scene of celebrated religious miracles. Then we continue to Oporto, Portugal’s second largest city and the capital of the North. Here, after crossing the Douro River, we see the multi-coloured houses of the Ribeira quarter and the Church of St. Francis before continuing to a port cellar for wine tasting. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    We return to Spain and visit Salamanca, Spain’s oldest university city, en route to Madrid on the Castilian plateau. This evening, why not try some traditional paella at one of the city’s many restaurants? (Buffet breakfast)

    Our morning sightseeing tour includes views of the Royal Palace, the Puerta del Sol and the Cervantes Memorial in the Plaza de España followed by a guided visit of the Prado Museum with its fine paintings by Velazquez and Goya among others.     First we drive to Toledo ,which is magnificently situated on a hill surrounded by a meander in the Tagus River. Our walking tour includes a visit to the Synagogue, the Church of Santo Tomé and a Damascene steel workshop because virtually all of the swords in Spain were forged in Toledo! Then back to Madrid where we drive along the wide tree-lined avenues to see the Cervantes Memorial in the Plaza de España, the Puerta del Sol and and we take a stroll to see the magnificent Plaza Mayor.     Day 4

    Today our Tour Director will show us a Hidden Treasure and we will hear about the legendary Don Quixote who jousted at windmills! Then to Cordoba where we visit the Mosque of the Caliphs and learn of the Moorish history of the region. Then we continue to our hotel in Seville. Tonight we enjoy a fantastic barbecue Spanish style! (Buffet breakfast / Highlight Dinner)

    Day 5

    Our sightseeing tour takes us through the tree-lined streets of Seville to the beautiful cathedral with its mighty Giralda Bell Tower and the tomb of Christopher Columbus. We will also see the pools and fountains of the Maria Luisa Park, and walk through the Jewish quarter. This afternoon we have a Flamenco dancing lesson – we will really be able to impress our friends when we get home!! (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 6

    A scenic drive takes us to Granada to enjoy a guided sightseeing tour including one of the most impressive sights in Spain, the Moorish Alhambra Palace, described as a ‘fantasy of lace in stone.’ We also wander through the exotic water gardens and have amazing views over the town and the surrounding hills from the terraces. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 7

    Today we drive to Guadix where you can see the largest number of cave dwellings in the province. Some of the cave dwellings look like small cottages. Others look like walled earthen mounds with chimneys sticking out of the earthen parts! Time to take pictures then on to Valencia, renowned for its oranges, where we see the Bull Ring and the Towers of Serrano and Quart. Then we learn that Valencia is also the place where paella was invented and we learn how to make this fantastic dish and to eat it too!! (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

    Day 8

    Our first stop is Peniscola, situated on a peninsula, it is dominated by the medieval fortified castle, with reminders of knights on horseback from the past. Then on to Barcelona where on arrival we will enjoy a sightseeing tour which highlights the fantastic architectural creations of Gaudi, the Ramblas, the Plaza Catalunya and the Gothic quarter with its magnificent cathedral. (Buffet breakfast)

    Day 9

    Today maybe drive to seaside Montjuic , site of the 1992 Olympics, or rent a bicycle and pedal around the beach and the Parc de la Ciutadella or visit the Nou Camp , the largest football stadium in Europe? This evening we enjoy a special Farewell Dinner together with our Tour Director and new-found friends to celebrate the end of our tour together. (Buffet breakfast / Farewell dinner)

    Day 10

    Adios to Spain, our Tour Director and our new touring friends as our Spanish tour comes to an end but we will soon return next year to explore more of Europe! Return flight to USA. (Buffet breakfast)

    Mon. This morning, enjoy the scenery of the Sierra de Aracena before crossing into Portugal and the fertile plains of the Alentejo. Admire Maria Luisa Park, the Golden Tower on the Guadalquivir River, and the university that used to be the tobacco factory of Carmen fame. Then, stroll through the narrow lanes of the charming SANTA CRUZ QUARTER, and visit the CATHEDRAL with Columbus’ tomb, the world’s largest gothic edifice.     Day 6: Seville–Granada.

    Day 7: Granada–Valencia.

    (Thu.) Cross Mora Pass and pass troglodyte cave dwellings hollowed out of the soft tufa stone near Purullena and Guadix on your way to Valencia, once a royal capital. (B)

    Day 8: Valencia–Barcelona.

    (Fri.) Valencia’s Roman, Moorish, and Spanish history comes alive during your guided walking tour. Enjoy free time before driving along the coast to Barcelona, the proud capital of Catalonia and Spain’s second-largest city. Tonight, you may wish to join an optional dinner at a typical Catalonian restaurant. (B)

    Day 9: Barcelona.

    (Sat.) Sightseeing with a Local Guide features the Columbus Monument, elegant tree-lined Ramblas, Plaza de Cataluna, and Paseo de Gracia. Visit the spectacular SAGRADA FAMILIA, Gaudi’s masterpiece, and enjoy a panoramic view of the city and harbor from Montjuïc Hill. Also visit the GOTHIC QUARTER.     Day 1: Sat. BOARD YOUR OVERNIGHT TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT.

    Day 2: MADRID, SPAIN.

    Sun. ARRIVE IN Check into your hotel. The rest of the day is free to start exploring lively Madrid. Tonight, meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers. (D)

    Day 3: MADRID.

    Mon. Of the Spanish capital, situated 2,180 feet above sea level, the Spaniards say it’s the nearest thing to heaven. You’ve only a day here and it’s certainly worth making the most of it by joining the included guided sightseeing tour: a full panoramic drive by way of the Avenida Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Parliament Square, and a picture stop outside the Royal Palace. The optional trip to Toledo is most rewarding, too. The splendid setting of this old walled city above the Tagus was made famous in El Greco’s painting, and even now it’s like a great open-air museum of Spanish history and art. (B)

    Day 4: MADRID–AVILA–SALAMANCA–COIMBRA, PORTUGAL.

    Tue. West for a visit to fortified Avila with its many towers. Next is Salamanca, just six miles from the spot where Wellington routed Napoleon’s army in 1812. Make sure you spend some time wandering around Plaza Mayor, the grandest square in Spain. Across the frontier to Guarda, the highest town in Portugal. From here, descend to the valleys of the Serra da Estrela to Coimbra for an overnight. (B,D)

    Day 5: COIMBRA–BATALHA–FATIMA–LISBON.

    Wed. This morning, enjoy your orientation tour of Coimbra, celebrated for its beauty and ancient university. Later, travel southwards to Batalha with a visit to its beautifully sited monastery. Today’s penultimate highlight is a visit to the Sanctuary of Fatima. A sterner and more desolate landscape accompanies you to Lisbon for your overnight in Portugal’s capital. A stop en route includes a wine bodega and some wine tasting. (B)

    Day 6: LISBON.

    Thu. Henry the Navigator made Lisbon the 15th-century mistress of the seas. On the included tour, see his monument, the Belem Tower, the Moorish Citadel, and the impressive Black Horse Square. Spend the afternoon in the Alfama’s tile-decorated streets, or take an optional excursion to coastal Estoril and Cascais. (B)

    Day 7: LISBON–SEVILLE, SPAIN.

    Fri. From the rolling plains of the Alentejo with its woodlands of cork and eucalyptus trees, southwards all the way to the brilliant light of Andalucia. Admire its neat white-painted villages and sun-drenched plantations of olives, figs, and almonds, while traveling by way of Beja into magnificent Seville. (B,D)

    Day 8: SEVILLE.

    Sat. At leisure in one of Spain’s most colorful cities. Perhaps you’d like to spend this morning enjoying an optional sightseeing tour including the main highlights of this vibrant city. (B)

    Day 9: SEVILLE–FERRY TO MOROCCO–FEZ.

    Sun. An interesting drive today starts with views of the sherry wine region before reaching the coast for embarkation on the ferry to Morocco. Next, motor south along what was once northern Africa’s infamous Barbary Coast. Join the new motorway for the drive southwards, then west, bypassing Meknes for two overnights in Fez. (B,D)

    Day 10: FEZ.

    Mon. At leisure in ancient Fez, which occupies a position of outstanding scenic beauty. This morning, visit the Medina on the included sightseeing and enjoy the maze of narrow streets through the colourful bazaars and the exotic atmosphere. (B)

    Day 11: FEZ–MIDDLE ATLAS–MARRAKESH.

    Tue. While motoring through the Middle Atlas on your way to Marrakesh, enjoy glimpses of North African village life reminiscent of Beau Geste. (B,D)

    Day 12: MARRAKESH.

    Wed. The highlight of this morning is the included city sightseeing. You’ll really feel as if you’ve stopped the march of time. Marrakesh has always been a meeting place—first just a group of nomad tents, now a bustling city. An optional evening excursion will be a fitting choice to end the day. (B)

    Day 13: MARRAKESH–CASABLANCA–RABAT.

    Thu. This morning, drive northwest from the heartland of Morocco by way of Settat to reach the most western of all Moroccan cities—Casablanca. Stop here awhile. Later in the afternoon, continue by way of the motorway northwards to Rabat, Morocco’s capital for city sightseeing and an overnight. (B,D)

    Day 14: RABAT–FERRY CROSSING TO SPAIN–GRANADA.

    Fri. Today an early departure retraces your steps northwards for the ferry across the Straits of Gibraltar to mainland Spain, and drive directly to the heart of Andalucia to reach Granada for an overnight. (B,D)

    Day 15: GRANADA–MADRID.

    Sat. Take advantage of the included visit with a Local Guide of the Alhambra, a summer complex built by the Moorish kings. This afternoon, drive into the very heart of La Mancha, famed for its castle and windmills. Overnight in Madrid. (B)
