    Day 1: Arrive in New Orleans

    . (Thu.) Welcome to New Orleans, the “Big Easy.” At 6 pm, meet your fellow traveling companions for a welcome drink. Your Tour Director will prepare you for your upcoming Southern adventure.

    Day 2: New Orleans

    . (Fri.) This morning, a Local Guide shows you the sights and sounds of New Orleans. Visit the French Quarter, including Jackson Square and Pirate’s Alley, then stop at a typical New Orleans above-ground cemetery and learn about the city’s unique burial customs. Drive along tree-lined St. Charles Avenue to see the stately homes bordering the historic Garden District. After seeing the city, enjoy lunch and a private demonstration at the NEW ORLEANS SCHOOL OF COOKING. Hear history and tall tales as you learn how New Orleans specialties are made. The remainder of the day is on your own to explore this vibrant city. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for additional sightseeing and the best places to shop and dine. (B,L)

    Day 3: New Orleans–Lafayette

    . (Sat.) Travel along the Great River Road to OAK ALLEY PLANTATION, “the Grande Dame.” Enjoy a guided tour of the house with time afterward to stroll the grounds in the shade of majestic oak trees. We then travel into the heart of Cajun country to Lafayette, where we’ll visit VERMILIONVILLE, a restored Acadian village in the bayou. Costumed interpreters demonstrate traditional crafts and musical styles. This evening, get ready to tap your toes! We start with a visit to MARTIN ACCORDIONS, where we hear firsthand how the Martin family began making their Cajun accordions, and see what the process actually involves. Enjoy music and storytelling by the Martin family. Questions and audience participation are encouraged. Afterward, enjoy a typical Cajun dinner and dance lesson at a local restaurant. (B,D)

    Day 4: Lafayette–Baton Rouge–Natchez, MS

    . (Sun.) We begin our day with an orientation tour of Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s state capital. Highlights include the Old Governor’s Mansion, the new Louisiana State Capitol, and the Old State Capital. We then cross the border into Mississippi and head for the charming port of Natchez, the oldest settlement on the entire Mississippi River. During your guided city tour, see magnificent antebellum homes, hear the city’s fascinating history, discover the romantic atmosphere, and uncover why Natchez is known as one of the most desirable small cities in the United States. Tonight, enjoy a delightful candlelight dinner at an elegant antebellum mansion. (B,D)

    Day 5: Natchez–Vicksburg–Jackson

    . (Mon.) Travel along scenic Natchez Trace Parkway north to Vicksburg, a crucial Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi during the Civil War. At the VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK an expert guide relates the dramatic story of the 47-day siege in 1863, which ended in victory for the Union. We then proceed to Jackson, Mississippi’s state capital, named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. (B)

    Day 6: Jackson–Biloxi

    . (Tue.) We travel across the state of Mississippi through De Soto National Forest and to the wonderful Gulf Coast. Upon arrival in Biloxi, enjoy an orientation tour, seeing sites that include the Biloxi Lighthouse, the Hurricane Katrina Memorial, and Hurricane Katrina Tree Sculptures. We’ll also visit BEAUVOIR, the splendid last home of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate Civil War president. Later, enjoy a SHRIMPING TRIP and learn about the spectacular world of sea life. This evening, dinner is at Mary Mahoney’s, a Biloxi tradition serving presidents, dignitaries, celebrities, and local folks for over 40 years. (B,D)

    Day 7: Biloxi. Excursion to Mobile, AL

    . (Wed.) Today we take the coastal highway into Alabama to visit the famous BELLINGRATH GARDENS & HOME on Mobile Bay. Walter Bellingrath, a pioneer in the Coca-Cola bottling industry, converted 900 acres of subtropical jungle into a magnificent estate. Stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens ablaze with colorful azaleas, camellias, and rose bushes. Before returning to Biloxi, explore the MOBILE CARNIVAL MUSEUM, which highlights the history of Mardi Gras in its true birthplace—Mobile. See the designs and artistry of majestic crowns, scepters, and robes, climb aboard a float, see historical photos, and witness the pageantry of past coronations. We return to Biloxi, where the remainder of the day is at leisure to shop for souvenirs, visit a local museum, or maybe try your luck at one of the dazzling casinos. (B)

    Day 8: Biloxi–New Orleans

    Days 1-2: New York Area & Washington DC

    We head out of the New York area onto Washington DC, the perfect introduction to the social, cultural and political history of the United States. Explore the best of America's Capitol - from the Smithsonian to the Lincoln Memorial on the guided tour. During the day the city is awash with greenery so once you're done with sightseeing, go people watching in the parks. Why not take advantage of the great nightlife in Georgetown!

    Day 3: Appalachian Mountains

    Days 4-5: Tennessee & Alabama

    Welcome to the Deep South. Time for some excitement! Choose to don a lifejacket, grip a paddle and bounce along a
    churning stretch of white water, for pure adrenalin. Then head through Alabama and tune in to local radio stations for a foot-tapping southern soundtrack of rhythm and blues!

    Days 6-7: New Orleans

    Now we're talking all that jazz! We head into the enchanting French Quarter of New Orleans! Hear the real deal at Preservation Hall, echoing with chirpy trumpet and smooth sax or sample a Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's! New Orleans has more than just food, drink and music to offer. Do the Huckleberry Finn thing as you chug along the Mississippi River. Then look for gators on the included Louisiana swamp tour through the mysterious bayous of Cajun country.

    Days 8-9: Panama City Beach

    Then on to the Gulf of Mexico's 'Southern Riviera' - Panama City. Dream of lazy beach days or windsurf and jet ski the afternoon away. It’s also the home of world-famous TABASCO® Sauce. Tour the VISITOR CENTER and learn how peppers are grown, harvested, and turned into sauce. Visit the Tabasco Country Store, then enjoy a visit to VERMILLIONVILLE situated on the banks of the Bayou. This Cajun/Creole heritage and Folklife Park recreates life in the Acadiana area between 1765 and 1890. This evening, consider a visit to the world-famous honky-tonk, Blue Moon Saloon. Sit back to enjoy the atmosphere and live music.

    Day 4: LAFAYETTE–LAKE CHARLES.

    Mon. Embark on a journey along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road through one of our nation’s last great wildernesses—a lush realm of fertile prairies, delicate marshes, and abundant wildlife. Explore Louisiana’s Outback, a living testament to South Louisiana’s natural beauty and unique cultural heritage, a natural haven vital to our entire nation’s ecosystem. Maybe enjoy dining at one of Louisiana’s award-winning restaurants, listen to local musicians, or try your luck in one of the many casinos.

    Day 5: LAKE CHARLES–NATCHITOCHES–SHREVEPORT.

    Tue. Step back in time, see the sights, and hear the history of the oldest settlement in Louisiana—by TROLLEY. Experience this historic town, the Creole architecture, and historic homes. Afterward, time on your own for additional sightseeing and shopping. An orientation tour of Shreveport gives you a true feel for the history of Louisiana’s “other side.” Your Tour Director will have suggestions for dining and sightseeing.

    Day 6: SHREVEPORT

    Wed. This morning, embark on a guided tour of SHREVEPORT’S MUNICIPAL MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM. Stand on the stage where Elvis performed and have your photo taken. Sit awhile and imagine some of the other great notables to stand on stage—from James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul,” and Little Stevie Wonder to Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, B.B. King, Hank Williams Sr., and many more. Step outside and explore the mighty Red River on the hour-long Spirit of the Red River cruise adventure. Learn about the city’s history and natural wildlife as you drift down the Red River on this GUIDED BOAT TOUR. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure to enjoy the Louisiana Boardwalk and experience the largest outlet shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in Louisiana.

    Day 7: SHREVEPORT–FERRIDAY–NATCHEZ.

    Thu. Before crossing into Mississippi, visit the FROGMORE COTTON PLANTATION and tour an 1800-acre modern-day working cotton plantation. Your guided tour takes you on a journey of the South. After refreshments in the plantation store, an included visit to the DELTA MUSIC MUSEUM focuses on the history, music, and culture of the Louisiana-Mississippi Delta region. During your visit, learn about local entertainers Jerry Lee Lewis, Aaron Neville, and Conway Twitty, evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, and blues trombonist Pee Wee Whittaker. Natchez adorns the banks of the mighty Mississippi with her magnificent antebellum homes and fascinating history.

    Day 8: NATCHEZ–BATON ROUGE–NEW ORLEANS.

    Fri. Natchez is noted among America’s historic cities for its wealth of architecturally and historically significant antebellum structures. This morning’s city sightseeing includes an inside visit to a historic ANTEBELLUM HOME. Continue your journey to Baton Rouge, representing the best of Louisiana’s vibrant culture. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation tour showing the Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol. This afternoon a guided tour of OAK ALLEY PLANTATION. The “Grande Dame of the Great River Road,” built in 1839, is famous for its 28 evenly spaced oak trees believed to be at least 100 years older than the house. Afterward, enjoy the well-manicured grounds at leisure. Tonight, join the optional dinner cruise and savor the beauty of the New Orleans skyline aboard the authentic Steamboat Natchez.SPECIAL EVENT: If you have selected to travel on the April 16 or April 23 departures you will be in New Orleans for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. You may choose to independently join the event and enjoy great music and classic New Orleans staples like Creole, Cajun, and international cuisine.

    Day 9: NEW ORLEANS.

    Sat. The morning is dedicated to the sights and sounds of this Old World city. First, visit the French Quarter, including St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square. Next, learn about the city’s unique burial customs at an above-ground cemetery followed by a leisurely drive down historic St. Charles Avenue to enjoy its stately mansions and clanging streetcars. Continue to Café Du Monde for delectable beignets, then visit MARDI GRAS WORLD, a tribute with the largest costume display in the South. It is a world of wonder with towering figures of fantasy, animated mega-floats, colors, lights, music, and plenty of joie de vivre. It’s all here in one magical place, where you can peek behind the curtain and see Mardi Gras in the making.

    Day 10: NEW ORLEANS.

    Sun. The day is free to experience more of this charming city. For shoppers, Canal Street and the French Quarter offer an extensive array of unique stores and designer boutiques. Your Tour Director will suggest several optional excursions, including a swamp boat ride through the bayous, as well as advice on the best places to dine out and go shopping.

    Day 11: NEW ORLEANS.

    Mon. & Tues. Two full days at leisure. Roam through the centuries-old French Quarter or take a carriage ride while listening to tales of voodoo queens and pirates. History enthusiasts can roam through sprawling Victorian mansions and celebrated museums, catching a glimpse of life the way it used to be in the Old South.

    Day 12: NEW ORLEANS.

    Mon. Embark on a journey along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road through one of our nation’s last great wildernesses—a lush realm of fertile prairies, delicate marshes, and abundant wildlife. Explore Louisiana’s Outback, a living testament to South Louisiana’s natural beauty and unique cultural heritage, a natural haven vital to our entire nation’s ecosystem. Maybe enjoy dining at one of Louisiana’s award-winning restaurants, listen to local musicians, or try your luck in one of the many casinos.

    Day 5: LAKE CHARLES–NATCHITOCHES–SHREVEPORT.

    Tue. Step back in time, see the sights, and hear the history of the oldest settlement in Louisiana—by TROLLEY. Experience this historic town, the Creole architecture, and historic homes. Afterward, time on your own for additional sightseeing and shopping. An orientation tour of Shreveport gives you a true feel for the history of Louisiana’s “other side.” Your Tour Director will have suggestions for dining and sightseeing.

    Day 6: SHREVEPORT

    Wed. This morning, embark on a guided tour of SHREVEPORT’S MUNICIPAL MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM. Stand on the stage where Elvis performed and have your photo taken. Sit awhile and imagine some of the other great notables to stand on stage—from James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul,” and Little Stevie Wonder to Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, B.B. King, Hank Williams Sr., and many more. Step outside and explore the mighty Red River on the hour-long Spirit of the Red River cruise adventure. Learn about the city’s history and natural wildlife as you drift down the Red River on this GUIDED BOAT TOUR. Your afternoon and evening are at leisure to enjoy the Louisiana Boardwalk and experience the largest outlet shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in Louisiana.

    Day 7: SHREVEPORT–FERRIDAY–NATCHEZ.

    Thu. Before crossing into Mississippi, visit the FROGMORE COTTON PLANTATION and tour an 1800-acre modern-day working cotton plantation. Your guided tour takes you on a journey of the South. After refreshments in the plantation store, an included visit to the DELTA MUSIC MUSEUM focuses on the history, music, and culture of the Louisiana-Mississippi Delta region. During your visit, learn about local entertainers Jerry Lee Lewis, Aaron Neville, and Conway Twitty, evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, and blues trombonist Pee Wee Whittaker. Natchez adorns the banks of the mighty Mississippi with her magnificent antebellum homes and fascinating history.

    Day 8: NATCHEZ–BATON ROUGE–NEW ORLEANS.

    Fri. Natchez is noted among America’s historic cities for its wealth of architecturally and historically significant antebellum structures. This morning’s city sightseeing includes an inside visit to a historic ANTEBELLUM HOME. Continue your journey to Baton Rouge, representing the best of Louisiana’s vibrant culture. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation tour showing the Governor’s Mansion and State Capitol. This afternoon a guided tour of OAK ALLEY PLANTATION. The “Grande Dame of the Great River Road,” built in 1839, is famous for its 28 evenly spaced oak trees believed to be at least 100 years older than the house. Afterward, enjoy the well-manicured grounds at leisure. Tonight, join the optional dinner cruise and savor the beauty of the New Orleans skyline aboard the authentic Steamboat Natchez.SPECIAL EVENT: If you have selected to travel on the April 16 or April 23 departures you will be in New Orleans for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.     Day 9: NEW ORLEANS.

    Sat. The morning is dedicated to the sights and sounds of this Old World city. First, visit the French Quarter, including St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square. Next, learn about the city’s unique burial customs at an above-ground cemetery followed by a leisurely drive down historic St. Charles Avenue to enjoy its stately mansions and clanging streetcars. Continue to Café Du Monde for delectable beignets, then visit MARDI GRAS WORLD, a tribute with the largest costume display in the South. It is a world of wonder with towering figures of fantasy, animated mega-floats, colors, lights, music, and plenty of joie de vivre. It’s all here in one magical place, where you can peek behind the curtain and see Mardi Gras in the making.

    Day 10: NEW ORLEANS.

    Sun. The day is free to experience more of this charming city. For shoppers, Canal Street and the French Quarter offer an extensive array of unique stores and designer boutiques. Your Tour Director will suggest several optional excursions, including a swamp boat ride through the bayous, as well as advice on the best places to dine out and go shopping.

    Day 1: CHICAGO

    . Welcome to the “Windy City.” Enjoy time at leisure to relax or to do some independent exploring. Your Tour Director is on hand this evening to answer any questions.

    Day 2: CHICAGO

    . Start the day with an included sightseeing tour and see all the landmarks of this exciting city. The afternoon and evening are at leisure. Ride the elevator to the top of Sears Tower, stroll in Grant Park along the waterfront, or take an optional cruise on Lake Michigan. This evening you might enjoy dinner on the Navy Pier with its collection of shops and restaurants.

    Day 3: CHICAGO–ST. LOUIS

    . Travel across the fertile Illinois farmlands today to St. Louis, the “Gateway to the West.” Cross the Mississippi River to St. Louis. City sightseeing includes a trip to the top of the towering GATEWAY ARCH, which commemorates the city’s key role in westward expansion. Be sure to visit the museum under the arch, celebrating the famous expedition of Lewis and Clark 200 hundred years ago.

    Day 4: ST. LOUIS–NASHVILLE

    . Start today’s journey by re-crossing the Mississippi River and rolling southeast to Paducah on the Ohio River by lunchtime. Late-afternoon arrival in Nashville.

    Day 5: NASHVILLE

    . Start the day with a sightseeing tour of Nashville’s famous landmarks and the recording studios of Music Row. We’ll tour historic RCA STUDIO B, the cradle of the “Nashville Sound” in the 1960s. Hitmakers in Studio B include such stars as Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Chet Atkins, Eddy Arnold, Willie Nelson, and the Everly Brothers. Afterward, visit the COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME with its glittering costumes, rare instruments, and Elvis Presley’s solid-gold Cadillac! Tonight you have reserved seats for a show at the world-famous GRAND OLE OPRY, a mecca for country musicians.

    Day 6: NASHVILLE–MEMPHIS

    . Cross Tennessee today to Memphis, the “Home of the Blues” and a city with a distinct Southern flavor. Enjoy an orientation tour on arrival. Join the optional excursion that visits famous Sun Studio, where rock ‘n’ roll was first recorded, followed by dinner at a local Memphis restaurant.

    Day 7: MEMPHIS. GRACELAND VISIT

    . A good portion of the day is devoted to GRACELAND, Elvis Presley’s beautiful estate. Your platinum audio tour focuses on the splendid garden, private plane, and the opulent 15,000-square-foot mansion. Return to Memphis mid-afternoon. Tonight, you may want to visit a blues club on famous Beale Street.

    Day 8: MEMPHIS–AMTRAK CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TRAIN–LAFAYETTE

    . Providing the locomotion for today’s journey through the state of Mississippi and into the Mississippi River delta is the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, the famous train of story and song. Pass cotton fields and catfish ponds as the train enters Louisiana. In Hammond, leave the train and board a motorcoach for the short drive into the heart of Cajun Country to Lafayette, first settled by French-Acadian farmers expelled from Nova Scotia by the British in the 1700s.

    Day 9: LAFAYETTE–NEW ORLEANS

    . On to St. Martinville to see the famous oak tree from Longfellow’s poem, “Evangeline.” Next, board your boat for a CRUISE through the winding, swampy waterways of the Atchafalaya Basin. If you are lucky, you might spot alligators basking on the banks. Then, cross Bayou Country into New Orleans.

    Day 10: NEW ORLEANS

    . Enjoy a full-morning tour dedicated to the sights and sounds of New Orleans and the French Quarter landmarks of St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square.     Days 1-2: New York Area & Washington DC

    First stop, the capital calls. Washington DC is the perfect introduction to the social, cultural and political history of the United States. Explore the best of America's Capitol - from the Smithsonian Museum to the Lincoln Memorial on the guided night time illumination tour. During the day the city is awash with greenery so once you're done with sightseeing, go people watching in the parks. Why not take advantage of the great nightlife in Georgetown!

    Days 3-4: Virginia & Tennessee

    From polished stone monuments to rocky paths, the Appalachian Mountains in Virginia put on a great glimpse of the rugged outdoors. In Tennessee, choose to don a lifejacket, grip a paddle and bounce along a churning stretch of white water on our optional rafting trip. Hey, we did say fast and furious!

    Day 5: Alabama/Mississippi

    Next, travel into the 'Deep South' to Alabama and Mississippi for a taste of true southern hospitality. License plates proclaim you're in the 'Heart of Dixie', as the radio pumps out a

    Days 6-7: New Orleans

    Beyond Mississippi we hit Louisiana, home of the Big Easy & Bourbon Street. Now we're talking all that jazz! We head into the enchanting French Quarter of New Orleans and hear the real deal at Preservation Hall, echoing with chirpy trumpet and smooth sax. Sample a Hurricane at Pat O'Brien's! New Orleans has more than just food, drink and music to offer. Do the Huckleberry Finn thing as you chug along the Mississippi River.

    Day 8: Louisiana/Texas

    Look for gators on our optional Louisiana swamp tour through the mysterious bayous of Cajun country (a must do!). The Lone Star bids you a big-hearted welcome for four nights in the mighty Texas. None of the other 47 continental states is bigger; come to think of it, everything seems vast in this pancake-flat expanse.

    Days 9-10: San Antonio

    Day 13: Arizona / Roswell, New Mexico

    After a visit to the famous Roswell's UFO Museum, pitch your tents together and chew the fat long into the night. What are those lights in the sky?

    Day 14: Monument Valley

    Venturing into the desert southwest, we hit the iconic Monument Valley used in Hollywood scenes from Westerns to 2001: A Space Odyssey and everything in between. Get jeep-bound and flit between towering buttes and massive mesas. This is sacred Navajo land; take home their secrets, legends and the odd handcrafted keepsake. Tonight, experience a stunning sunset overlooking the valley.

    Days 15-16: Grand Canyon National Park

    No trip west is complete without a stop at the Grand Canyon and we have a full day tomorrow to experience the grandeur of Earth's natural wonder. Pack your best boots and don't forget your camera for a sunrise/sunset hike along the rim. For the more ambitious take the long hike down Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point, or choose the "bird's eye" view on a scenic flight. Watching the sinking sun paint it amber, maroon and red, its breathtaking immensity still blows you away.

    Days 17-18: Lake Powell & Zion National Park

    Swim the deep blue waters of Lake Powell, formerly the great Glenn Canyon, or just sit back on the shore and soak up the powerful rays of this beautiful and surreal man-made desert oasis. Then onwards to Zion National Park. Explore the hidden canyons or maybe hike to Angels Landing. Okay, so getting up there can be devilish at times, but the famous trail puts Zion on a 360-degree display of this magnificent national park

    Days 19-20: Las Vegas

    With a sudden burst of neon, Vegas is right in your face - the greatest show on earth. Watch out though - some dub this place 'Lost Wages'! Why not cruise "The Strip" in a super-stretch limo, indulge in an all-you-can eat buffet, take in a show or just watch the amazing crowds, neon signs and attractions that many hotel casinos have to offer. And if that's not enough, take a helicopter flight back down The Strip or just gamble the night away in one of the world class casinos.

    Day 21: Los Angeles

    Journey across the desert and catch some California sun as you roll into the larger than life LA scene. Why not hang out at and people watch at Venice Beach tonight?

    San Francisco is next, "Everybody's Favourite City". Enjoy a full day to explore the city with plenty of time for shopping in China Town & Union Square, sightseeing and a stroll over the Golden Gate Bridge. Maybe take a cruise on the bay for an unforgettable sunset, then go bar hopping 'til the tiny hours. Mission, Marina or Haight-Ashbury Districts usually check the right boxes.

    Days 26-27: Yosemite National Park

    Heading through Central California we take a scenic drive into the Yosemite National Park region and a chance to hike or bike through the extraordinary landscape of glacier-carved granite monoliths and spectacular waterfalls. Hike to Yosemite Falls, one of North America's highest, and capture El Capitan's great granite profile on camera. Keep your eyes peeled for the chance to view the park's abundant wildlife.

    Days 28-29: Lake Tahoe & Idaho/Nevada

    Set sail at Lake Tahoe on an optional sunset cruise or play the house in one of the flash casinos - though a gentle pedal boat ride, scenic parasailing or an energising jet-ski, may just as easily push your buttons. Now your posse heads across a heap more widescreen scenery as you edge westward through Idaho & Nevada.

    Days 30-31: Jackson

    Feel the old frontier spirit alive and kicking in the truly western town of Jackson, Wyoming. Fresh from conquering the Snake River rapids, one of America's last great untamed rivers, on an optional whitewater rafting trip, corral your posse into the nearest watering hole. Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is a fine tip, with saddles for stools and trophy cow horns above the counter.

    Days 32-33: Yellowstone National Park

    Pitch up in the world's first National Park, Yellowstone. This is a superb wilderness of spouting geysers, waterfalls and simmering mud pools. A-grade American stars grace the trails - keep your eyes peeled for this abundant wildlife. Large herds of bison and elk roam the park and if you're lucky, you may even see bear or wolf.

    Day 34: Cody

    Next, it's Wild Wyoming, the heart of cowboy country, This is what Cody is all about. From its cowboy roots to its summer rodeos, shake a leg and try some two-step as the buckin' bronco rears its massive head!

    Day 35: Sioux Indian Lands

    Yep, we're talking Mount Rushmore and the uniquely sculptured faces of our four greatest Presidents Close by, another rock-carved epic is shaping up: the Crazy Horse monument, a nod to the famed Lakota Indian war leader, very impressive!

    Days 36-37: Badlands National Park & South Dakota

    Never mind the "bad lands", touching down here feels like a moon landing. Low-slung buttes, chiselled spires and saw-tooth ridges have a bizarre lunar quality as you swap some photos. Resident coyotes may utter the occasional howl as you settle back for some shut-eye under canvas.

    Days 38-39: Chicago

    Our next stop is Chicago - the "Windy City", home to some of the greatest blues music in America. Soar up Willis Tower for dizzying views over the Windy City. Trawl the upmarket malls of Magnificent Mile and grab a slice of Chicago's deep-dish pizza before peddling on the included famous "Bobby's Bike Hike" tour.

    Day 40: Ohio

    Ask a "Buckeye" to tell you all about their state nut or how cool they think Cedar Point Amusement Park's rollercoasters are! Ride the Millenium Force - the greatest roller coaster in the world!

    From the edge of Lake Ontario, the sensation of crashing water is stupendous, the noise immense, at America's greatest national attractions, Niagara Falls.     Day 42: New York Area

    We roll into the New York Area and the end of our awesome Grand Trek! This tour is not scheduled to spend any time in New York City so make sure you book extra hotel nights and explore the sights and sounds of the Big Apple on your own. Splurge along Fifth Ave, hit the top of the Empire State Building, or soak up the trendy, laidback vibe of Greenwich Village before heading home.

Tonight, you might like to experience the city’s beauty and romance on a 2-hour cruise from the heart of the French Quarter on New Orleans’ only steamboat.

    Day 4: NEW ORLEANS–BATON ROUGE–NATCHEZ

    Sat. Drive through the heart of Cajun Country to Baton Rouge for an orientation tour that features the Governor’s Mansion and the state capitol. Next, on to elegant Natchez, a thriving port in the golden years of the cotton trade. Visit a gracious PRE-CIVIL WAR HOME featuring fine collections of period furniture and paintings. In the evening, relax and perhaps sip a refreshing mint julep as the sun goes down.

    Day 5: NATCHEZ–JACKSON–MEMPHIS

Then, enter the “Peach State” of Georgia and continue through Chattahoochee National Forest to the fast-growing metropolis of Atlanta, former home and burial place of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. After an included sightseeing tour of the city, the rest of the day is yours to explore or relax. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for a taste of Southern dining this evening.

    Day 9: ATLANTA–SAVANNAH

    Thu. We head south through rich, rolling farmland to the historic seaport of Savannah for a 2-night stay. On this afternoon’s TROLLEY TOUR, see the sights, hear the history, and visit the charming city squares of Georgia’s First City. Highlights include City Market, Forsyth Park, the Mercer House, Madison Square—where General Sherman concluded his “March to the Sea”—Colonial Park Cemetery, and the world-famous River Street. This evening is free to explore this charming city on your own.

    Day 10: SAVANNAH

    Fri. A day at leisure to explore. Shop on cobblestoned River Street or stroll among the many squares surrounded by elegant homes and majestic gardens. Don’t miss Forsyth Park with its lovely fountain and flowers or the impressive Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, where you can learn about Savannah’s important role in maritime history and view models of famous ships.

    Day 11: SAVANNAH–ST. AUGUSTINE–ORLANDO

    Sat. Travel into the “Sunshine State” of Florida, stopping first at St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. You will see the Oldest House and the Spanish fortress, Castillo de San Marcos, on your orientation tour. Then, drive to the magical city of Orlando.

    Day 12: ORLANDO

    Sun. A full day to relax and explore the many sights in the Orlando area. Your Local Host will suggest a varied and exciting selection of optional outings, such as Disney’s huge entertainment parks, including the Magic Kingdom®, Animal Kingdom®, Epcot®, and MGM Studios®.     Day 1: NEW ORLEANS

    Wed. Enjoy time at leisure to relax or to do some independent exploring. Your Tour Director is on hand this evening to answer any questions.

    Day 2: NEW ORLEANS

    Thu. The morning is dedicated to the sights and sounds of this Old World city. First, visit the French Quarter including St. Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square. Next, learn about the city’s unique burial customs at an above-ground cemetery, followed by a leisurely drive down historic St. Charles Avenue to enjoy its stately mansions and clanging streetcars. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

    Day 3: NEW ORLEANS

    Fri. A full day at leisure. Roam through the centuries-old French Quarter or take a carriage ride while listening to tales of voodoo queens and pirates. History enthusiasts can roam through sprawling Victorian mansions and celebrated museums, catching a glimpse of life the way it used to be in the Old South. Tonight, you might like to experience the city’s beauty and romance on a 2-hour cruise from the heart of the French Quarter on New Orleans’ only steamboat.

    Day 4: NEW ORLEANS–BATON ROUGE–NATCHEZ

    Sat. Drive through the heart of Cajun Country to Baton Rouge for an orientation tour that features the Governor’s Mansion and the state capitol. Next, on to elegant Natchez, a thriving port in the golden years of the cotton trade. Visit a gracious PRE-CIVIL WAR HOME featuring fine collections of period furniture and paintings. In the evening, relax and perhaps sip a refreshing mint julep as the sun goes down.

    Day 5: NATCHEZ–JACKSON–MEMPHIS

    Sun. Drive to Jackson, then north through rural Mississippi to Memphis. For your first night in the “Home of the Blues,” why not visit one of the famous music clubs on Beale Street, immortalized in WC Handy’s famous songs?

    Day 6: MEMPHIS–GRACELAND–NASHVILLE

    Mon. A trip to Memphis would not be complete without visiting GRACELAND, the palatial home of “The King,” Elvis Presley. Our guided platinum audio tour focuses on the splendid garden and the opulent 15,000-square-foot mansion. Afterward, head through the fertile farmlands of Tennessee to the “Capital of Country Music,” Nashville.

    Day 7: NASHVILLE

    Tue. Its association with country music has made the name Nashville world famous, but it’s not just music fans who will find this charming Southern city a delight. Start the day with a sightseeing tour of the famous landmarks, including the Parthenon, the state capitol, Bicentennial State Park, and the recording studios of Music Row. Then, visit the COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME with its glittering costumes, rare instruments, and Elvis Presley’s “solid gold” Cadillac. This evening, you have reserved seats for an unforgettable show at the world-famous GRAND OLE OPRY, a mecca for country musicians since 1925.

    Day 8: NASHVILLE–CHATTANOOGA–ATLANTA

    Wed. First stop today is Chattanooga, home of the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Then, enter the “Peach State” of Georgia and continue through Chattahoochee National Forest to the fast-growing metropolis of Atlanta, former home and burial place of civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. After an included sightseeing tour of the city, the rest of the day is yours to explore or relax. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for a taste of Southern dining this evening.

    Day 9: ATLANTA–SAVANNAH

    Thu. We head south through rich, rolling farmland to the historic seaport of Savannah for a 2-night stay. On this afternoon’s TROLLEY TOUR, see the sights, hear the history, and visit the charming city squares of Georgia’s First City. Highlights include City Market, Forsyth Park, the Mercer House, Madison Square—where General Sherman concluded his “March to the Sea”—Colonial Park Cemetery, and the world-famous River Street. This evening is free to explore this charming city on your own.

    Day 10: SAVANNAH

    Fri. A day at leisure to explore. Shop on cobblestoned River Street or stroll among the many squares surrounded by elegant homes and majestic gardens. Don’t miss Forsyth Park with its lovely fountain and flowers or the impressive Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, where you can learn about Savannah’s important role in maritime history and view models of famous ships.

    Day 11: SAVANNAH–ST. AUGUSTINE–ORLANDO

    Sat. Travel into the “Sunshine State” of Florida, stopping first at St. Augustine, the oldest city in the United States. You will see the Oldest House and the Spanish fortress, Castillo de San Marcos, on your orientation tour. Then, drive to the magical city of Orlando.

    Sun. A full day to relax and explore the many sights in the Orlando area. Your Local Host will suggest a varied and exciting selection of optional outings, such as Disney’s huge entertainment parks, including the Magic Kingdom®, Animal Kingdom®, Epcot®, and MGM Studios®.
