Day 1: Arrival and Tour Kick-Off

San Francisco’s charms are as tall as the Golden Gate Bridge and as tiny as an exquisite dim sum dumpling. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful city in America, and we will spend two nights in San Francisco.

    • Arrive at San Francisco International Airport with included transfers to your hotel
    • Meet your Tour Manager at 6 p.m. for evening dining suggestions

Day 2: Find Your Heart in San Francisco

Our guided tour takes us on a cable car ride. We cross the famous Golden Gate Bridge with its breathtaking views and into Sausalito. This Mediterranean-style community is perched around the bay with a wide selection of restaurants and shops lining its scenic marina. After lunch, we cruise the bay, the best way to see the city’s beautiful skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island.

We have dinner on Fisherman’s Wharf, famous for its historic waterfront, delicious seafood, spectacular sights and unique shopping. Whether you dine on seafood or steak, your view will be of a bustling harbor with the Golden Gate Bridge arching above it. Hopefully, we can enjoy one of the most breathtaking sunsets in the world and an after-dinner stroll as our time in “The City by the Bay” draws to a memorable close.

Day 3: Sequoias and the Sierra Nevada Mountains

We board our comfortable motorcoach for a ride through San Joaquin Valley, known as the nation’s salad bowl. The rambling hills grow steeper as they ascend into the Sierra Nevada chain and the spectacular mountain and valley scenery of Yosemite National Park. This land is sacred to Native Americans, a mine of gold and broken dreams for generations of prospectors and a favorite of landscape photographer Ansel Adams. The park harbors a grand collection of waterfalls, meadows and forests that include groves of giant sequoias.

We begin our Yosemite National Park adventure with a narrated tour of Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Share the wonder of this ancient and beautiful grove as you hear about the history these magnificent trees have seen. Giant Sequoias, considered to be the most massive living thing on earth, can live from 1,000 to 3,000 years. Three groves totaling 700 trees are located in the park. Our riverside lodge is nestled at the foot of a mountain. Before our bountiful dinner, enjoy the clean mountain air as you walk the forest paths or relax on shady benches.

We see El Capitan, a one-mile-thick granite mountain and the thundering Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America. An afternoon is yours to choose among Ansel Adam’s gallery, the Indian Village, a hike to the base of a waterfall or other activities. Birdwatchers may spot a great grey owl, Peregrine falcon or pileated woodpecker while animal lovers will be on the lookout for mule deer, bighorn sheep and black bears. Today you wind through the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains en route to one of Mother Nature's greatest masterpieces, Yosemite National Park. While camping at the park in 1903, President Teddy Roosevelt called Yosemite "the most beautiful place in the world." Yosemite’s amazing waterfalls, unique rock formations, deep valleys, Alpine meadows and groves of giant sequoias will leave you awestruck as they did Ansel Adams, who lived in the park while taking his famous portfolio of striking photographs. Upon arrival, join your fellow travelers on an open-air tram* to view sites such as Yosemite Falls, Half Dome and El Capitan, as well as learn about the park's history, geology, and wildlife.

Day 4: Yosemite National Park - Monterey

Travel to Monterey, the city often called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky. Monterey is home to the famed 17 Mile Drive, also known as one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world. Along the drive you will pass through the Del Monte Forest and see such famous sights as the Lone Cypress Tree, perhaps the most photographed tree in the world; Seal Rock, where the seals may actually bark at you; and the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Next, travel to Old Monterey, the place where California’s statehood began in 1849, filled with lovingly restored historic buildings and Spanish adobes. An afternoon arrival will allow you time to independently explore charming Old Monterey and shop at Cannery Row, made famous by John Steinbeck.

Tour the Castle, built on a 40,000 acre ranch that Hearst frequently camped on as a child. Now a National Historic Landmark, Hearst was constantly building and rebuilding what he simply called "the ranch." As a result, the estate was not completed during Hearst's lifetime, and was later donated to the State of California in 1957. Explore some of its 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. Later, arrive at the quaint Danish village of Solvang, in Santa Barbara County, known for its old-world architecture and flower-lined streets.

Some free time allows you to explore the downtown area laced with pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and paseos, with the Santa Ynez Mountains as a lovely backdrop. You may prefer to grab a pedicab (Santa Barbara’s answer to the rickshaw) or hop aboard an eco-friendly electric shuttle to the waterfront area famous for Stearns Wharf which has been a part of the scene since 1872.
